GOP Readies for Battle Over Climate, Security Link

WASHINGTON -- The ongoing war in Afghanistan, looming defense cuts and greater military focus in the western Pacific dominated President Barack Obama?s unusual Pentagon appearance in January to present his new national defense strategy.

Environmental concerns weren?t in Obama?s talking points that day, but it?s that aspect of his strategy that drew particular fire this week as the Republican Convention in Tampa rolled toward Mitt Romney?s acceptance Thursday night of the GOP presidential nomination.

In short, the Republican platform charges the Pentagon worries too much over global warming instead of far more important security issues.

?The strategy subordinates our national security interests to environmental, energy and international health issues, and elevates ?climate change? to the level of a ?severe threat? equivalent to foreign aggression,? the platform reads. ?The word ?climate,? in fact, appears in the current President?s strategy more often than al-Qaida, nuclear proliferation, radical Islam, or weapons of mass destruction.?

The defense strategy labels the risks from climate change ?real, urgent and severe,? warning it could spark wars as nations battle over dwindling resources and refugees flee drought- or flood-stricken lands.

But while environment and energy issues in the context of defense have become a hot-button issue under Obama, the idea that climate is a security issue was on the table well before he took office.

In 2008, a simulation by researchers at the National Defense University examined the security implications of rising sea levels driving refugees from low-lying Bangladesh into India and touching off fighting between Muslims and Hindus.

The year before, a group of retired three- and four-star admirals and generals concluded in a study for the Center for Naval Analysis that climate change is a ?threat multiplier? that raises the likelihood of conflict in the globe?s most dangerous regions.

And with reports from scientists this week that Arctic Sea ice has shrunk to its smallest size since satellite monitoring began decades ago, there are indications that security effects of climate change could be felt outside of heavily populated southern regions. New sea routes may soon be opening and with that, international jockeying over maritime influence and claims will pick up, said former Pentagon strategist Barry Pavel, now director of the international security program at the Atlantic Council of the United States, a NATO-oriented Washington think tank.

?This is a climate issue and a defense issue that is coming on fast whether we like it or not,? Pavel said. ?The military has got be tracking these things, and not doing so would be negligent.?

Climate change is hardly a core strategic priority, Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. James Gregory said, but it?s one planners have to prepare for.

?The Department is prudently considering how to factor climate impacts into its mission areas, such as the potential for instability and conflict, (and) the needs for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief,? he wrote in an email.

Biofuel battle

Republicans in Congress are leading a fight against another energy- and environment-related initiative dear to the Obama administration, hammering the Navy?s quest to fuel its ships and aircraft with advanced biofuel made from algae, among other things. A purchase of 450,000 gallons fueled a demonstration of the ?Great Green Fleet? in a recent exercise in the western Pacific. But the House has approved a measure that would slash Pentagon investments in biofuel production.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said the effort will eventually ensure a secure fuel supply that doesn?t depend on the volatile Middle East.

?We can?t afford not to do this,? he said in July. ?First, our dependence on foreign sources of fossil fuel is rife with danger for our nation and it would be irresponsible to continue it. Second, paying for spikes in oil prices means we may have less money to spend on readiness.?

But the Navy biofuel costs $27 a gallon, compared to about $3.50 for regular fossil fuels, and opponents call it a simple waste of money.

David Kreutzer, an energy researcher at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative Washington think tank, said there?s abundant domestic gas and oil to fuel the military no matter what happens in the Middle East.

According to his calculations, the U.S. military needs around 360,000 barrels of crude a day to carry out its operations. A single oil well in the Gulf of Mexico is capable of providing most of that volume, Kreutzer said.

He added that even if the military cuts all fossil fuel use, it would not have a measurable effect on the rate of climate change.

?There?s no case you can make they can moderate global warming by switching to biofuel,? he said, ?and there?s no case you can make this is as cheap as domestic fossil fuels.?

An analyst from across the political spectrum said that view is short-sighted and could kill development of an eventual source of abundant energy.

?The Republican platform is an oil-above-all platform that opposes investments in alternatives to oil, including advanced biofuels,? said Daniel Weiss, senior fellow director of climate strategy at the Center for American Progress Action Fund, a Washington-based progressive advocacy organization.

The military has played a vital role in developing the high-tech advances that have defined the modern age long before they were cheap he said.

?Under the Republicans' view, there would have been no need to invest in the internet through ARPA because it was not cost competitive with the US post office,? he said.

Social Business: So You're Doing a Facebook Contest?. | Business ...

For many small businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn has seemingly created new channels and spawned a multiplicity of ways to connect for them to reach out to and connect their audience(s).? Unfortunately, the reality is easier said than done: Because social platforms are both cost-effective and readily accessible, the number of voices being transmitted in this digital milieu has increased exponentially.? Furthermore, the number of corporate brands that now actively use?and promote?their social media presence has increased significantly in the last 2-3 years, so that their messages and engagement initiatives tend to overshadow the voices of smaller, independent businesses, still-growing start-up companies, etc.

After all, how can locally-owned ?Mom & Pop Shop XYZ? amplify its internet voice or capture the attention of Facebook users when a majority of its audience is far more preoccupied by P&G?s latest product giveaway or ESPN?s newest fan contest?? I?ve watched many small businesses attempt to draw in new customers, or attempt to capture new market shares from their larger, better-known competitors, only to walk away disappointed, underwhelmed, or even worse, with a negative ROI on their social media campaign investment.? One of the most expensive tactics?and a favorite of many B2C brand giants?the social contest or giveaway model, has been especially ineffective for many of the small business owners and entrepreneurs that I?ve spoken with.? Many small companies and business owners pay thousands of dollars to partner with a third-party agency or fulfillment company to set-up these promotions, then struggle to attract Facebook users, improve their engagement metrics, and increase the recognition and visibility of their product or brand over the duration of the promotion.? Yet, much of this underperformance can be attributed to clogged communication channels, poor networking and ineffective word-of-mouth sharing (both on- and off-line).? While little can be done about the first issue (or at least, I don?t have any advice or methods for decreasing or silencing the non-stop chatter that abounds in the social realm), there are ways around the latter two.

Amplifying your social voice and online presence through a contest sponsorship or freebie giveaway should be easy, right?? Who doesn?t love free stuff, or experiencing the thrill of winning?the gambler?s joy of getting something for (supposedly) nothing?? And for businesses and/or sales teams, the lead captures from all those completed online entry forms ought to virtually guarantee a high ROI, right?? Wrong.? Among the small business owners, entrepreneurs, and start-up brands that I?ve spoken with on this subject, many of the leads captured through contest or freebie promotions were either unqualified leads, or they were existing customers who already knew about the product or business.? However, I won?t discuss the merits of the latter, or how to go about determining and understanding the value or ROI here, suffice it to say that this audience segment wasn?t the desired target audience that most of my colleagues or clients were seeking.? Clearly, their social media conversations, online promoting, and advertising methods weren?t doing enough to separate their voice from the rest of the crowd and didn?t capture the attention of social users unfamiliar with the business, brand, or product.? This is where the right networking tactics and leveraging your network connections can make the difference between a strike-out and a home run.

Tip 1: Reach out to the Blogosphere

Like any reasonable, financially prudent individual in this economy, I love a good bargain and am not above using a coupon (or eight) during a weekly grocery run, or doing online research before making a purchase to make sure I?m getting the best deal possible.? Though I?m barely a novice?at best?in the art of practiced frugality, I?ve stumbled upon some great money-saving, extreme-couponer and ?freebies? blogs over the years.? Snicker though you may, many of these penny-pinching fanatics have built up a devoted, equally thrifty readership capable of crashing even the best-built Facebook contest platform on any given day.

Prior to the start of your contest or sampling promotion, draft a press release or design an embeddable promo ad that can be sent electronically to bloggers.? Be sure to outline promo requirements, rules, and other pertinent info in a format that is both professional and straightforward.? Remember, all messages communicated on behalf of your business or product impact how your brand is perceived, including its overall legitimacy and integrity.? If your promotion is based on a free sample giveaway or grand prize drawing, include photo representations of sample product(s) or prizes.? Bloggers love to dangle the proverbial carrot in front of their readers? mouths and the more enticing, or lucrative an offer, the bigger the carrot.? Perhaps the only thing these bloggers like more than free swag is posting the best contests, deals, and freebies first.? Like businesses, they too are forced to stand apart from competing voices, and the best way to build and grow a loyal readership is to publish quality content.? Many bloggers also syndicate their content through Facebook pages, and will offer contest reminders or blog updates for their readers once an offer goes live or a promotion officially begins.

Building a relationship with reputable bloggers is a mutually symbiotic relationship if embarked upon properly.? Better yet, it doesn?t cost a cent (unless you?re paying someone to develop PR materials or design digital campaign collateral for you) and provides the basis for a solid brand experience foundation that will befit your brand?s influence and reputation in the future.? Another advantage of forging and leveraging such blog connections is the free word-of-mouth buzz and increased brand or business exposure that will increase internet traffic to your social media pages, website, and other online holdings.? Many bloggers will like to post backlinks to published content?s original source, or may be genuinely excited about what you?re offering that they voluntarily provide backlinks in their comments, posts, or forum discussions?all of which gets factored into your SEO rank and impacts how easily internet users can find your business or product page(s) in internet searches.

The bottom line?? While Unilever, P&G, Kroger and Co. may not have the time or interest in connecting online with random, average-Joe bloggers (and why would they, when they?ve already spent millions on multi-channel, multimedia, multi-market contest campaigns?), blogger engagement and networking should be an essential activity included as part of your next promotional giveaway or contest marketing campaign.? You may only be able to raise your voice so high, but you can certainly add other voices to harmonize with yours and focus some of that excess, non-relevant chatter.

Sony demos Bravia HX950 flagship HDTV at IFA, confirms pricing from €2,999 (hands-on video)

Sony demos Bravia HX950 flagship HDTV at IFA, confirms pricing from 2,999 handson video

Eager to get your hands on a top-of-the-line set without shelling out five figures for a super-slick 55-inch OLED? Sony's Bravia HX950 may have caught your eye, with its Intelligent Peak LED Backlight that's said to deliver "the best contrast Sony has to offer." According to representatives at IFA (who don't always tend to offer the most consistent specifications), the full-array system includes 196 individual zones, letting the television adjust backlighting on a more granular level, resulting in brighter whites and deeper blacks. We caught up with both the 55- and 65-inch flavors of Sony's HX950 at the company's booth, where several demo stations were arranged to highlight the backlighting, along with features called 3D Super-Resolution, Internet Video Super Resolution and HD Super Resolution. All of the side-by-side demonstrations provided noticeable improvements, though all three Super Resolution settings may be a tad too sharp for some viewers.

The set itself is as gorgeous as you'd expect for a flagship model, with a black glossy bezel and a narrow design that's sufficiently svelte without stepping into ultra-thin territory. The specially designed glass panel does indeed help to reduce glare, as we experienced in the visually congested IFA booth. Perhaps most interesting is the price -- €2,999 (about $3,800) for the 55-inch model, and €4,999 (about $6,300) for the 65 incher -- a steep drop from the 650,000 yen (about $8,270) the HDTV is commanding in Japan. We weren't able to confirm US availability or pricing, which will likely come in below the European tag, but reps did quote a November 1st ship date, which seems to be in line with the November 10th date we heard for Japan earlier this week. You'll have but two months to wait before adding this monster to your collection, but you can snag a look today in our gallery below and hands-on video after the break.

Activists: Rebels, Syrian troops clash in Aleppo

BEIRUT ? Activists say rebels are attacking several security compounds in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said one of Friday's attacks targeted a compound in the neighborhood of Zahraa, killing and wounding a number of troops. It gave no figures.

Aleppo-based activist Mohammed Saeed said rebels are attacking four security buildings around Syria's largest city, using rocket launchers and machine guns.

Rebels took parts of Aleppo, Syria's commercial capital, last month. Since then, government forces have been trying to recapture them.

Activists estimate more than 20,000 people have been killed since the uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime began more than 17 months ago, turning into a civil war.

There has been fighting all over the country, including the capital, Damascus.

Courageous, Pro-Israel Mensch Andy Roddick Retires From Tennis: Said No to Muslim Apartheid

By Debbie Schlussel

American pro tennis player Andy Roddick announced yesterday that he is retiring from tennis after this week?s U.S. Open. And I will miss him because he is one of the few courageous, principled men in pro sports, today. As you may recall, in 2009, when Israeli Jewish professional tennis players were banned from the Qatar Open and Dubai Tennis Championshps per the Arab Muslim boycott on Israel and accompanying apartheid travel ban against Israeli Jews, Roddick was the only pro tennis player to speak out against it. Not only did he speak out against it, he went a heroic step further by pulling out of the 2009 Dubai Tennis Championships.

Andy Roddick: Retiring American Tennis Hunk Has Uncommon Courage

Dubai relented after being fined $300,000 for refusing a visa to Israeli player Shahar Pe?er. But Roddick, a gentile, was a better Jew than Ms. Pe?er, who chose to participate in Dubai?s Jewish tennis player minstrel show. In discussing why he pulled out of the tournament, he made it clear he didn?t approve.

U.S. star Andy Roddick said he wouldn?t defend his Dubai title next week.

?I really didn?t agree with what went on over there. I don?t know if it?s the best thing to mix politics and sports, and that was probably a big part of it,? Roddick said.

As the top American men?s tennis player for the last decade, Roddick didn?t need to do that. But he?s a mensch.

Roddick won the tournament the previous year and could have won big cash again, had he not chosen to boycott. What athletes will do that, today? None. Roddick?s protest was especially appreciated, given that the Williams Sisters, Venus and Serena, defended Qatar and refused to press the issue, despite the fact that Venus Williams sat on tennis? governing board?the board that could have forced Qatar to allow the Israelis.

By the way, Roddick is also a Republican, according to several news reports.
