RIM CEO Thorsten Heins reportedly 'clearing house,' laying off numerous executives

With BlackBerry World only weeks away and RIM's earnings report merely hours away, it looks as if newly-appointed CEO Thorsten Heins will be leading it with quite the bang. While Heins has done a truly exceptional job of laying low (really low) during his first few months in the corner office, he's evidently been hard at work rearranging chairs... mentally, at least. According to The Globe and Mail's Iain Marlow, a trusted source has informed him that the BlackBerry maker's head honcho has begun "clearing house," with senior vice presidents and VP-level executives being informed of the imminent changes today. We're tracking down more on the story right now and will update this post as details flow.

Update: The report is up in full, with an unnamed source explaining: "Lots of high level people within RIM were let go today. Quite a few. Big shake up." We're still awaiting official word, which is apt to be found buried deep within the eventual earnings release.

Maxim Minimized. Big Layoffs Hit Men?s Mag Web and Editorial Staff

The Internet killed the magazine star. There's been a major round of layoffs at Maxim magazine. Senior Editor Seth Porges is at least one employee who got the axe, according to our sources and confirmed by a recent update to his Twitter bio that now lists him as "EX-MAXIM". Update: We've confirmed there's been six layoffs from the editorial, web, and photo teams, whose total full-time headcount numbers roughly 13, so just under half of that staff. The layoffs could be a response to declining magazine sales due to the fracturing of men's attention caused by rise of the internet and social media. There's just more places for men to look at gadgets, guns, and girls than there used to be.

Acer Aspire AM3970-UR11P

The Acer Aspire AM3970-UR11P ($699.99 list) certainly has an awkward name. Pity, because the desktop strikes a good visual balance between utilitarian and flashiness. It's a tower, but it's not a boring looking tower. Component-wise, the system is pretty much a middle of the road tower desktop with some internal storage capability. It's got some software additions to help Acer fans, like those who bought an Iconia Tab, but ultimately it's a middle of the road desktop with a middle of the road price and feature set.

Design and Features
The AM3970-UR11P is built into a full sized tower desktop chassis, with a mainly black visage. It's got some styling cues to distinguish itself, like a side mounted power button and optical drive releases. It's got space inside for some decent expansion, including space for two additional PCIe x1 cards, two more hard drives, and an optical drive. All four of the memory DIMM slots are filled by the included 8GB of RAM, but 8GB should be enough for even power users at this time. One PCIe x1 slot is filled by the installed 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi card, and the PCIe x16 slot by the AMD Radeon HD 6450 card. The Radeon HD 6450 is an entry-level graphics card. It's not too powerful, but it is DX11 compliant, which makes it more advanced than the DX10-compliant Intel HD Graphics 2000 built into the Core i5-2320 processor. Outside, the system has a plethora of ports: ten USB 2.0, two faster USB 3.0 ports, HDMI-out (on the graphics card), audio ports, PS/2 ports (mouse and keyboard), a DVI port, and Ethernet.

The USB 3.0 ports are key, as they allow you to use speedier external hard drives for extra storage. The USB 3.0 ports are in the back, but four USB 2.0 ports are on the top of the system. The top ?mounted ports are in front of a top-mounted tray, which is convenient if you'd like to park your external hard drive, camera, or smartphone for charging. The HDMI port on the graphics card lets you either set the system up with dual displays, or lets you hook the system up to a HDTV in your den for HD video viewing. The system has ample room for expansion, but be forewarned that the system can only use a midrange graphics card because of the 300W power supply. That said, the included Radeon card is fine for most non-game tasks. The system comes with a standard 1TB 5,400rpm SATA hard drive and a DVD burner, but you can add another two hard drives and another optical drive to the system.

Along with the hardware, the AM3970-UR11P comes with a lot of included software, however most of it could be categorized as bloatware. Just on the desktop, there's a smattering of icons for Acer Games, Acer Registration, clear.fi (connections to Acer tablets and smart TVs), eBay, McAfee Internet Security (a short 60-day subscription is included), Netflix, Barnes & Noble Nook, and Skype. While most of these services are useful, most require an additional subscription or payment. Strewn across the desktop surface, they remind the user of the deluge of ads in a place like Times Square. The whole effect is kind of busy. The same programs plus a bunch of others like Fooz Kids, NY Time Reader, Aupero! (online radio), My Winlocker, and Norton Online Storage are in the Start menu, which is frankly a better place for all these programs. Now some (or all) of these programs may be useful to you, but they clutter the desktop and hard drive. It would be best if Acer allowed you to choose to load them during the initial setup, so you don't have to deal with uninstalling them later.

Performance
The AM3970-UR11P's Core i5-2320 processor, 8GB of memory, and AMD Radeon HD 6450 graphics card help the system gain respectable benchmark numbers. The system is pretty quick, with a 1:20 time on our Handbrake video test, and 3:26 on our Photoshop CS5 test. These are comparable to the similarly equipped Dell XPS 8300 (x8300-4004NBK) (1:21 on Handbrake; 3:35 on CS5) ($699.99 list, 3.5 stars) and is a smidge faster than the compact Apple Mac mini (Thunderbolt) ($799 list, 4.5 stars) (1:42 on Handbrake; 3:47 on CS5). It's even within striking distance of the Alienware X51 ($999.99 direct, 4 stars) (1:20 Handbrake, 3:36 CS5). 3D performance is another matter, however. The AM3970-UR11P only shows an unplayable 27 fps on Crysisand 13 fps on Lost Planet 2, similar to the Dell XPS 8300 (x8300-4004NBK) but far behind the gaming-oriented Alienware. Suffice to say, if you want 3D gaming, go with an entry level gaming system right off the bat rather than buying an entry/midrange system and upgrading later.

Compared with the competition, the Acer Aspire AM3970-UR11P comes up as adequate, but unremarkable. It's about as powerful as the Dell XPS 8300 (x8300-4004NBK), but the Dell has a lot less in the way of bloatware. The Alienware X51 is a lot more expensive due to its gaming-class graphics card, but it's a better choice if you want gaming performance, since the AM3970-UR11P can't accept a gaming card later on. The midrange Editor's Choice Gateway DX4860-UB33P ($599.99 list, 4 stars) is ultimately a better bang for the buck, as it is $100 less expensive and has similar performance and features, aside from using integrated graphics instead of the AMD Radeon card. In concusion, the AM3970-UR11P is OK if you're an Acer fan; otherwise, there are better choices out there.

Foolish Money Mistakes to Avoid in Real Estate.

With April Fool?s Day rapidly approaching, what better time to discuss foolish money mistakes? We make lots of them, from budgeting errors to tax mistakes to investment blunders and everything in between.? So, let?s start with these five ? as they pertain to housing:

1. Trying to time the market

Granted, some of us can?t buy a home because we don?t have good credit and can?t get financing. Many others, though, are stubbornly waiting for prices to drop further.? Timing the market, as such, is problematic because a housing bottom is only going to become apparent after the fact. Are you so risk-adverse that you?re missing the big picture here?? Home affordability is off the charts right now (Nationwide,?home values are?down 24% below their 2007 peak), and mortgage rates, while they have been ticking up lately (See next item.), remain at historic lows.? It?s a combination you don?t see often.

2. Fixating on home prices only

We can?t emphasize this enough: prices are just one factor in how much a home will cost per month.? Mortgage rates are the other.? While still below where they were a year ago, rates are starting to rise as the economy improves. In fact, they recently topped 4%.? That?s up from 3.88% just two weeks ago, and is the highest level since late October. Some economists say rates are likely to keep rising throughout 2012 and into 2013, so even if home prices keep dropping, higher mortgage rates could counteract that, closing your window of opportunity.

3. Not knowing your credit score

This number is readily accessible so if you?re in the market for a loan, find out where you stand! To get your FICO score (a score used by most lenders), go to myfico.com ($19.95).? Other (free) options include creditkarma.com, creditsesame.com, and quizzle.com. Or, use Zillow?s credit score estimator (free).

4. Failing to research loan options

A survey by Zillow Mortgage Marketplace shows that borrowers are spending twice as much researching a car purchase as they are home loans ? five hours versus ten, respectively, even though the average cost of a home is about five times more than the average costs of a car.? Really now.

5. Overlooking savings of doing a refinance

An estimated 14 million creditworthy Americans, reluctant to refinance for any number of reasons, are overpaying their mortgages by an average of $471/month. By refinancing, these homeowners could save nearly $57,000 over 10 years. Want to see how much you could save first-hand? LOS ANGELES (AP) ? At the little hole-in-the-wall cafe that has served for half a century as the unofficial pit stop for Los Angeles Dodgers fans heading to baseball games, there was Magic in the air Wednesday.

That's Magic as in Earvin Johnson, the beloved basketball icon who, his city awakened to learn, has been named one of the new co-owners of LA's once equally beloved baseball team.

As for the current owner, the reviled Frank McCourt, the general sentiment was that he shouldn't let the door hit him in the rear end on his way out of town.

But for The Magic Man, as he's affectionately known in these parts, it was an entirely different story.

"Everyone loves Magic," said Dorman Austin as he sat at a table in Philippe's, the 104-year-old corner deli that claims to have invented the French dip sandwich. The place has been a haven for Dodgers fan since the team moved just a mile up the hill when Dodger Stadium opened in 1962.

On Wednesday, not a person in the place, save a few tourists who had no idea what the hoopla was about, disagreed with him.

"The whole town is going to go crazy. Magic Johnson, he's the right guy to do this. He's just so popular," said Wally Quan, shoving aside his breakfast for a moment to pick up a copy of the Los Angeles Times sports section and point to a half-page photo of the former Los Angeles Lakers star.

"And this guy, he's a baseball man," Quan said, pointing to a much smaller photo of Stan Kasten, the former president of the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals, who is part of the ownership group that McCourt agreed to sell his bankrupt team to.

The deal must still be approved by Major League Baseball and a federal bankruptcy court.

If it is, Quan and others see the Johnson-Kasten group quickly ending a long municipal nightmare that began with McCourt's purchase of the Dodgers eight years ago.

Things really went sour for McCourt after he and his ex-wife, Jamie, became embroiled in a long, costly, bitter divorce and the team fell into financial decline, filing for bankruptcy protection last year.

As financial troubles mounted, the team's play declined, the stadium began to look run down and attendance fell off.

Quan said he quit buying season tickets when he found he couldn't give them away to friends on the days he couldn't go.

Meanwhile, some of those who did go seemed to get into drunken fistfights at almost every game. That came to an ugly head during opening day last year when a man was nearly beaten to death for wearing a rival San Francisco Giants jersey.

The crowd at Philippe's expects Johnson to change all that. If not immediately, very soon.

He'll turn a struggling team back into a winner, they say, just like he did when he joined the Lakers as a rookie in 1979 and led them to their first championship in eight years.

"Magic won't put up with mediocre stuff," said Mike Baldwin, a longtime fan who quit going to Dodgers games after McCourt bought the team.

And although he was a basketball player, not a baseball player, Magic'll know what to do, said Quan.

"When he played basketball he always went into the game with a strategy to win," Quan said. "Then when he went into business he had a strategy. And that's what he'll do with the Dodgers. He'll have a strategy to win."

UW Cancer Center Riverview invites all men with prostate cancer and prostate cancer survivors to attend the Prostate Cancer Support Group on Thursday, April 5, from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. in Riverview Medical Center?s Lower Level Conference Center, 410 Dewey Street, Wisconsin Rapids.

The April meeting will feature the ?Planning & Delivering Radiation Treatment for Prostate Cancer Using TomoTherapy,? presented by Vicki Mullins, radiation therapist, and Poonam Yadav, physicist, with UW Cancer Center Riverview. Light refreshments will be served.

The Prostate Cancer Support Group meets the first Thursday of every month from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. in Riverview?s Lower Level Conference Center. Freedom from Chronic Pain ? EFT Identifies and Melts the Basic ...

Chronic pain is the body?s way of informing us that it?s not at peace; it is sick. It?s also a warranted way of getting our attention. A terrifically effective, safe and non-intrusive way we are able to respond to agony is by applying Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). Our unresolved negative emotions contribute significantly to most physical pains and diseases. When we are unable (for whatever reason), to express emotions like wrath, resentment and grief, they?re swallowed and repressed. They later show up in the body as agony and illness.

At the time I became ill, I did not understand how to resolve the hurt and resentment I was experiencing, because of problems at work and in my relationship. Plus, I was coping with the sudden death of my aunt to whom I was very close. The subsequent indications of intense fatigue, joint and muscle discomfort, brain fog, noise and light sensitivities, and digestive abnormalities actually attracted my attention ? my body was screaming out to get heard.

Seven months later when I was introduced to EFT, my consultant helped me release many stressful memories, which had led on to the hurt and antagonism I was hanging on to. Extremely swiftly, I was able to review formerly troublesome memories with neutrality and acceptance: I was still aware they had occurred; only my perspective had modified. Concurrently, I realized that certain symptoms were easing or disappearing, particularly, my joint and muscle agony, and the difficulties with my digestion and food intolerances.

Unlike many types of talk treatment, with EFT it is not important to dig deeply and relive unpleasant memories in fine detail. Rather, what appears to occur is that once one or two upsetting memories are cleared, other related memories are slumped without a need to be worked on in particular.

Peeling away the complicated layers of chronic illness and agony can be complex and delicate. There may be masses of ?unpleasant memories? to work thru which have resulted in repressed emotions and later sickness. Also , on a subconscious level, a chronic illness or pain can serve a person very well. All of a sudden they?ve a purpose. When a person is seriously sick or suffering chronic pain, there are fewer expectancies put on them, so they can feel safer: they no longer have to prove themselves, achieve success or be ?perfect?.

When I begin to work with a client coping with chronic pain I ask particular questions designed to get some insightful clues regarding the root cause of the pain. One such query is:

?What is the upside of holding on to this pain/illness??

Naturally, the first reaction is, ?There is no upside, I?d like to be healthy!? but when the issue is reframed to suggest, ?What would be the downside to recovering?? the client tunes in to how their life was prior to becoming ill.

When I asked a client suffering from Trigeminal Neuralgia (intense facial discomfort causing spasm) this question lately, in her first personal session, she answered, ?If I recovered, I?d need to be perfect again and I would have to look after and help everyone.? It transpired that as one of 6 children she had been expected to look after her siblings because her mother was quite sick for time. She had felt acrimony as a result. She had continued this role of looking after everybody else when she married and had a family of her own, always putting herself second. Now, subjected to intense pain, she was, finally able to be looked after and aided by others. She targeted on the acrimony and the memory of her childhood, and we applied EFT till she no longer felt any emotional power or reaction to the experience. At the end of the session, she told me the desperateness she?d felt about her facial discomfort was ?lighter? and ?didn?t seem to matter as much now?. Naturally, there is still more work to be done addressing her inability to ask for what she required (making her body ask for her) and in organising her life and relationships so that she was never having to ?give ? all the time, but could also ?receive?.

Another question which offers discernment is:

?If there had been a person or an event in your life which you?d just as soon skip, who or what would it be??

One client told me that she would never have taken that vacation to Florida as a young woman, as it had been the catalyzing agent for her health issues. Just after returning, she was assessed with CFS and later , multiple chemical sensitivities and ulcerative colitis. She had repressed emotions of outrage and regret ever since. Forty years after, she was housebound and still seriously sick. We used EFT on the holiday memory. Not only were we able to neutralize the negative principles she?d felt about herself because of the holiday, but she was able to see new possibilities for her future. Since that time, we have worked together closely and now she?ll put up with more wide-ranging foods, is able to leave the house regularly, exercises, and has a part-time job writing.

In the end if the right questions are asked, we?re able to the root cause quicker and get the answers we require to heal the issue. Furthermore, if we may be able to resolve the emotional reasons for physical sickness and chronic pain, surgery may not be obligatory.

Barbecue is Back in My Neighborhood

Ever since 'Bird and Bones' closed their doors and Catfish Alley changed locations, nobody came around to fill the void until very recently when 'Kathy's Southern Cooking,' a longtime local favorite took the Bird and Bones spot, and newcomer 'Big Paul's BBQ,' took the spot of 'Cafe Verdi,' a longtime personal favorite. Cafe Verdi were the neighborhood EMS (Emergency Munchie Suppliers,) and have brought me back to life on many occasion. I will miss them. However, as much as I am sad to see Cafe Verdi go, I'm equally excited abouit the arrival of Big Paul's BBQ.

I checked them out tonight. They are brand new, just ten days in business. Big Paul is a real dude too, and big. He's a real friendly guy with hospitality written all over him. He Came right out and said hello to me and introduced himself to everyone else who came in. Cynthia the waitress was as friendly as she could be too, and greeeted me with a huge smile as I walked in at 30 minutes before closing time. In fact, i think the last table to come in arrived at 9:55 and they got the same treatment. I'm certain Cynthia and Paul would have graciously posed for photos, but I didn't have the heart to ask them. They were getting ready to close up and were pretty busy.

Paul was keeping busy being the host and talking to a table near mine. I heard him say that he is closing for a few weeks to completely redesign the place to his standards, and from what he was saying, and the food I ate, I think I've stumbled upon a real gem. The menu is standard barbecue and Southern/Cajun fare. Talk about the best of both worlds. If the blackened catfish is any indication of how they do Cajun then I got Paradise in my backyard. This was absolutely the best blackened catfish in Las Vegas and I would put it up against 'Hush Puppies,' or 'Lola's' phony Cajun any day of the week.

The blackening seasoning, a family recipe bestowed upon Paul by his grandmother, was balanced just right and savory to a mouth-watering degree. The catfish was perfectly cooked and moist. Just as tender as could be, and you will not want to stop eating it. The BBQ was everything it could be and has all the earmarks of a master's hand. You can choose between different combos and platters with all the main players to choose from as side dishes. I had pulled pork and brisket, with cole slaw and macaroni salad. I could go on all day about the BBQ's tenderness and perfect amount of smoke, but if you know good BBQ then you know what I'm talking about. Big Paul's is good BBQ. Singer Robin Gibb, who spoke last month of making a "spectacular" recovery from cancer, has had further surgery, according to a statement released to the British media on Wednesday.

The 62-year-old, a founding member of the disco-era hit machine the Bee Gees, has been forced to cancel several commitments due to the operation.

"On Sunday 25 March, Robin Gibb underwent further intestinal surgery," the statement read.

"He is currently recovering in hospital and therefore, for the time-being, all existing commitments prior to the Titanic Requiem concert, have had to be cancelled."

His spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

"The Titanic Requiem" is Gibb's first classical work written with his son Robin-John, and is being released to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the luxury liner on April 15, 1912.

The world premiere of the work is due to take place at Central Hall, Westminster in London on April 10.

Media speculation about Gibb's health was sparked in recent months by his gaunt and frail appearance, but the singer said in February that a growth in his colon had "almost gone" and he was feeling "fantastic."

Findings may lead to new strategies to address insulin resistance

Scientists at the Gladstone Institutes have discovered a key protein that regulates insulin resistancethe diminished ability of cells to respond to the action of insulin and which sets the stage for the development of the most common form of diabetes. This breakthrough points to a new way to potentially treat or forestall type 2 diabetes, a rapidly growing global health problem.

In a paper being published online this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers in the laboratory of Gladstone Investigator Katerina Akassoglou, PhD, describe an unexpected role of the p75 neurotrophin receptor in controlling how the body processes sugar. Called p75NTR, this receptor protein is usually associated with functions in neurons.

"We identified that p75NTR is a unique player in glucose metabolism," said Dr. Akassoglou, who is also an associate professor of neurology at the University of California, San Francisco, with which Gladstone is affiliated. "Therapies targeted at p75NTR may represent a new therapeutic approach for diabetes."

The pancreas makes a hormone called insulin that processes glucose, moving it from the bloodstream into the body's cells where it is used for energy. Insulin resistance is a key feature of Type 2 diabetes, in which glucose builds up in the bloodstream and the body's cells are unable to function properly. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 20 million Americans have type 2 diabetes.

"Type 2 diabetes has become a very serious health problem and it is increasing at an alarming rate," said Lennart Mucke, MD, who directs the institute in which the research was conducted. "These findings provide an important new avenue for developing better therapies to combat this deadly diseasethe seventh leading cause of death in the United States."

Complex signaling interactions between several different types of tissueincluding fat, liver, muscle and brainregulate glucose metabolism. Because p75NTR is found in fat and muscle tissue and participates in many important functions in the cell, Gladstone scientists hypothesized that p75NTR might also help to regulate glucose metabolism.

To study this, the researchers used mice that lacked the genes for p75NTR. They compared these mice to normal mice and discovered that those lacking p75NTR were more responsive to insulin when fed a normal diet. Second, they used some molecular biology tricks to block the action of the p75NTR protein in fat cells. This also resulted in increased glucose absorption in response to insulin. In contrast, when they caused the fat cells to make more p75NTR, glucose absorption was reduced. Additionally, the researchers found that another important regulatory molecule, Rab5, played a key role in p75NTR's impact on metabolism.

"Importantly, regulation by p75NTR enhanced insulin's effectiveness in normal lean mice on a normal diet," said Bernat Baeza-Raja, PhD, postdoctoral fellow and lead author of the study. "Because these mice already process glucose efficiently, the actions of p75NTR on glucose transport indicate a direct role of this protein in the regulation of glucose metabolism."

"Our studies of p75NTR's unanticipated role in regulating glucose metabolism suggest a new target for drug therapies," said Dr. Akassoglou. "Future work is needed to test whether this finding may translate into a potential treatment."
