Poll: Views on gun laws unchanged after Aurora massacre

The?movie theater massacre in Aurora, Colo.,?has had no?significant impact on?public views on the issue of gun control and gun rights, according to a new poll released Monday.

The poll?by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press?found that?47 percent of respondents?say it?s more important to control gun ownership, while 46 percent say it?s more important to protect the rights of Americans who own guns. That is virtually unchanged from a survey?in April, when 45 percent prioritized gun control and 49 percent gun rights.

Dhavan Shah, a communications and political science professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said the results show?that despite tragedies?like?the July 20?massacre in Aurora, which?left 12 dead and scores wounded, public opinion on guns is deep-seated and?rigid.

?News events and disruptions in the media don?t do a lot to shift those opinions,? Shah told NBC News. ?Those shifts tend to be more gradual.?

?

Other recent major shootings also had little effect on public opinion about gun laws. According to Pew surveys, there was no significant change in the balance of opinion about gun rights and gun control after the January 2011 shooting in Tucson, Ariz., in which U.S. Rep.?Gabrielle Giffords was injured. Nor was there a spike in support for gun control following the shooting at Virginia Tech University in April 2007.

The latest Pew survey, conducted July 26-29 among 1,010 adults in the U.S., also showed that relatively few Americans view the shooting in Aurora as part of a?broader social problem. Rather, 67 percent said that shootings like this are?isolated acts perpetrated by?troubled individuals.

This is similar to public reaction after the Tucson and Virginia Tech shootings, when 58 percent and 47 percent of poll respondents, respectively,?viewed them as isolated act by troubled individuals.

James Holmes charged with murder in Colorado theater shooting

Shah, an expert on the social psychology of media influence and communication effects on political judgment, said the findings in the surveys highlight the public?s?focus on the trivial rather than?fundamental issues.

?The narrative almost always gets formed around the insanity, the extremism of that particular assailant and not a broader discussion of the number of firearms or number of fatalities due to firearms,? he said. ?That doesn?t do much to change public opinion. Immediately the discussion shifts back to ?He called himself the joker and he had red hair.??

Public opinion about gun rights has been politically divided for years. Republicans prioritize gun ownership rights by a 71 percent to 26 percent margin, according to Pew, while Democrats prioritize gun control by a 72 percent to 21 percent margin. Independents are?less polarized, with 50 percent saying the priority should be protecting the rights of Americans to own guns and?43 percent saying?it should be controlling gun ownership.

?There are not a lot of people in our society who are happily occupying the middle, especially on issues like gun control,? Shah said. ?That?s part of our broader political culture that is deeply divided, highly partisan and hugely uncompromising.?

Outside of a few isolated voices ? primarily New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg ? few political leaders have called for stronger gun laws after the Colorado shooting and other?recent gun violence,?like the Fort Bragg shooting in June. The Obama administration?s reluctance to push for tighter gun laws, Shah said, reflects how far the political debate over gun owners? rights has shifted in the past two decades.

?Leaders of both political parties shy away from commenting on this policy because they know people are so evenly divided," Shah said. "Saying you want to end gun violence may be interpreted as saying you want to end gun rights and gun advocates are very mobilized and powerful. It?s tough constituency to go up against.?

Ultimately, Shah said, despite how fluid public opinion may or may not be, the current dialogue regarding gun laws underscores the need for deeper discussions on the issue.?

?It?s rather astounding to me that we?re not having a public discussion about this beyond the gossip about this one individual attacker,? Shah said. "Instead, it?s talking heads on cable news shows yelling at each other and politicians who need to hit talking points. The broader context in our society is missing.?

Brett FavreAP

The Brett Favre playing era ended in 2010. ?The Brett Favre coaching era officially has begun.

When agent Bus Cook recently acknowledged that Favre would be helping out at Oak Grove high school, the place where Favre prepared for his various unretirements, Cook didn?t know what Favre?s precise role would be. ?As it turns out, Favre will serve as offensive coordinator, according to the Associated Press.

And Oak Grove isn?t some rinky-dink school. ?The 6A program at the 1,500-student facility is a perennial power in Favre?s home state of Mississippi.

?The stress is already getting to me,? Favre joked. ??I?ll wake up in the middle of the night saying, ?Hey, maybe we can do this? ?Maybe that will work???

If it doesn?t work, he won?t lose any money. ?He?s doing the job without pay. ?And perhaps for good reason.

?My experience in pro football means nothing,? Favre said. ?Absolutely nothing here. ?It?s totally different. ?So our biggest learning curve as a team might be my learning curve.?

So what does Favre bring to the table?

?I really believe I?m good at reading people,? Favre said. ??From being in the huddle, being in the locker room and in all those meetings for all those years, I understand that some people learn this way and some learn another way. . . . ?My whole job is to try and keep things simple. ?The more you have to think, the less your talent can show.?

It also gives Favre a way to keep busy, without having to leave home.

?One of the reasons I retired in the first place was I wanted to be in one place and experience all these things with my family,? Favre said. ?This year will be a trial basis [for coaching]. ?I feel like I can help the kids, but I?m not promising we?ll win any more games. ?Shoot, we might not win one.?

Favre?s comments help explain why he hasn?t gotten into broadcasting. ?Unlike players, who have 10 road games per year, players-turned-media-members are on the road every week. ?For Favre, he would have been traveling to a game site every Thursday or Friday, or to the ESPN (Connecticut), NBC (New York), CBS (New York), or HBO (L.A.) studios every Friday or Saturday.

Plus, he would have had to wear a tie. ?And something other than flip-flops.

He?ll likely be wearing something other than flip-flops on the sidelines at Oak Grove. ?But there will be no ties, and the travel will entail at most hopping into a bus on Friday afternoon, and getting home late Friday night.

Olympics track & field: 5 athletes to watch

With 49 different events from the women's 3000-meter steeplechase to the men's shot put, track and field has far more than five athletes to watch, but here are some of the most-watched.

    1. Yohan Blake, Jamaica (sprinter)

The man to watch on the track in London, as in Beijing, is clearly Usain Bolt. In Beijing, the Jamaican not only won the gold in the 100- and 200-meters, but set world records doing it. Enter Yohan Blake, whom Bolt calls the "Beast." The reason? "Because when you're sleeping, I'm working," Blake told the British newspaper the Guardian. That work ethic has made him perhaps the co-favorite for the 100- and 200-meters in London with Bolt. In the Jamaican trials, Blake won both races.

In fact, Jamaica has a decent chance of sweeping the men's 100 meters, with Asafa Powell also a medal contender. American Tyson Gay, for one, hopes to break up that trio. But if the Jamaicans can manage it, they will match what their women did in Beijing, taking gold, silver, and bronze in track and field's showcase event.

    2. Ashton Eaton, USA (decathlete)

The winner of the Olympic decathlon, it is often said, wins the unofficial title of "world's best athlete." This year, that could be American Ashton Eaton. He certainly made a statement at the US Olympic trials, where he scored 9,039 points, breaking an 11-year-old world record. In London, as at the Olympic trials in Oregon, Eaton's top competition could be American Trey Hardee. Indeed, had not defending Olympic champion Bryan Clay made mistakes in the hurdles and discus, America would have a chance to sweep the medals. As it is, Clay failed to qualify.

Historically, the decathlon has been good to America. It was what got Bruce Jenner on a box of Wheaties, of course. And an American has stood atop the podium 12 of the 22 times a decathlon medal has been handed out since 1912. From 1936 to 1960, an American won the men's decathlon at every Olympics ? a six Games winning streak.

    3. Jessica Ennis, Britain (heptathlete)

As the top British gold-medal favorite in what is arguably the Summer Olympics' biggest sport ? track and field ? Jessica Ennis stands to be perhaps the face of the games for the host nation. She is currently ranked No. 1 in the world, but two Eastern Europeans stand right beside her as the best heptathletes in the world, Tatyana Chernova of Russia and Nataliya Dobrynska of Ukraine. (The heptathlon is the women's decathlon, but has only seven events compared to the decathlon's 10.)

She is well aware of the pressure of potentially being Britain's Cathy Freeman, the gold-medal-winning Australian sprinter who provided the Sydney Olympics with perhaps their most iconic moment. "Because of the expectation and pressure, I think anything but gold, everyone would view that as a failure and I'm aware of that," Ennis told London's Evening Standard.

    4. Yelena Isinbayeva, Russia (pole vault)

Yelena Isinbayeva leaves no doubt that she is a diva. But as often as not, she also leaves no doubt of her skill. The Russian pole vaulter is the two-time defending gold medalist and widely considered the best ever. Widely loved? Maybe not as much.

Part of Isinbayeva's game plan is to try to psyche out the competition by not taking any easy vaults. Most competitors start vaulting at relatively low heights to help get them warmed up. Not Isinbayeva. She starts only when the heights start getting difficult, and until then, she lies on the infield of the track with her back to the competition and a towel over her head as though to signal her complete disdain for her competitors. Those competitors, including British favorite Holly Bleasdale, have said they are not amused.

Often, it works, though. She's broken her own world records 28 times. Sometimes, it doesn't. At the 2009 world championships, she failed to make a single vault. The same thing happened in a Olympic warm-up event in Monaco earlier this month.

Which Isinbayeva will show up at the 2012 Olympics? Who knows. But London could be her last Games. She's suggested she may retire.

    5. Allyson Felix, USA (sprinter)

Allyson Felix is the Michelle Kwan of the 200 meters, you might say. Humble, unfailingly polite, and enormously talented, Felix is the best 200-meter sprinter of her generation ? but she has never won Olympic gold. Twice, she has finished second.

"I've never gotten over it," she said at a pre-Olympics media summit. "I don't want to. It's motivation."

Both times, the winner was Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown, and with Jamaica seeking to replace the US as the world's top sprinting nation at these Games, the race takes on an added significance.

Felix will also run in the 100 meters after she controversially tied for third with Jeneba Tarmoh at the US Olympic trials. With only three US sprinters allowed in the 100 at the Olympics, and no formal procedure for breaking a tie, the governing body of US track and field suggested a run-off. Tarmoh declined, conceding the spot to Felix.

Felix is not considered a medal favorite in the 100, but the race could help her improve her start times in the 200. In the 200, she has a reputation of relatively slow starts and strong, winning finishes.

    WANNA BET?

I wanted Andy Murray. I ended up with Usain Bolt.

My fault, apparently, though I still would have liked to have gotten 5 quid down on Murray at 4-1 to win the Olympic tennis gold. Sweet redemption it would be for Murray after losing in the finals at Wimbledon. Sweet for my wallet, too.

Unfortunately, the tennis had already begun, so the clerk at the William Hill betting parlor on Pentonville Road couldn't book the ticket. So I went with a parlay of Bolt winning the 100- and 200-meter sprints and Jamaica winning the 4x100 relay.

Betting is a national pastime in England, and William Hill and Ladbrokes shops compete every few blocks around London. It's also one of the few places that take Olympic bets ? Vegas doesn't book them ? on everything from Michael Phelps winning two or more gold medals (4/6 odds) to opening ceremony director Danny Boyle getting a knighthood for his work getting the Olympics off to a good start (even money).

On a bustling Monday morning at the Pentonville Road shop, there wasn't much demand for Olympic action. A couple punters (British slang for bettors) were watching a telecast of greyhound racing from Sheffield, but the betting window was otherwise unoccupied.

I got my money in on Bolt and his teammates (at 2/1 odds), then added a bet on Ryan Lochte to win the 200-meter freestyle (3-1) on a lark.

Proof, perhaps, that not all the Olympic action takes place in official venues.

The actor is auctioning off his 2008 Tesla "Signature 100" Roadster, to aid victims of the crisis in the Sudan.

Valued at $100,000-$125,000, the black metallic electric car - with two-tone leather interior and just 1,700 miles on the odometer - will be auctioned off by Gooding & Co. on August 18.

The Roadster, the eighth of its kind produced by the electric car manufacturer, is among the slate of offerings Gooding's annual two-day Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance event.

2 men injured in shooting outside Washington Community Center

TERRE HAUTE ? A shooting in Terre Haute remained under investigation Sunday evening as two victims were sent to area hospitals.

Yellow tape marked off a section of the Booker T. Washington Community Center?s parking lot Sunday afternoon where shell casings, blood and a knife remained on the ground as investigators checked the scene.

According to police, an altercation involving weapons occurred in the parking lot about 2:50 p.m. The lot is on the south side of the building, between the center and the Chuck Miles Memorial Shelter and the nearby playground.

The center is at the corner of 13th Street and College Avenue.

A community basketball tournament was reportedly under way inside the center at the time. Terre Haute City Parks and Recreation Department employee Martin DeBow was identified as the individual in charge of the tournament, but he declined to comment on the incident. Dozens of people wearing basketball team jerseys remained in the area past 4 p.m., but those asked for comment also declined.

Capt. Carl Greene said that to the best of his knowledge that afternoon, two men were shot during the incident and both were transported to local hospitals before being sent by air to Indianapolis. No more information would be available while the investigation continued, he said.

?We?re still trying to gather information,? he said at the scene, stating no arrests had been made and investigators were still trying to identify a suspect.

In another incident, 911 dispatchers said shots also were reported outside the Blu Katt Lounge off Seventh Street and Wabash Avenue at 1:58 a.m. Sunday morning. According to police, no injuries were reported and no arrests had been made by Sunday evening with regards to that incident.

India abuzz about mystery woman at Olympics

    By The Associated Press

A mysterious woman in red has caused an international incident at the London Olympics.

Indian officials are mystified ? and miffed ? after an unknown young woman managed to march with the country's athletes and officials during the opening ceremony Friday night.

Games organizers on Sunday downplayed security concerns around the unscripted moment, saying the interloper was a ceremony cast member and had been screened before entering the Olympic Park.

Images from Friday's ceremony showed a young woman in turquoise jeans and a red jacket marching alongside Indian flag bearer Sushil Kumar at the head of the delegation of 40 athletes in bright yellow and navy blue.

"We are totally dazed," Indian press attach? Harpal Singh Bedi said. "How can a person without any accreditation walk past?"

Indian officials said they had no idea who the woman was. Indian media identified her as Madhura Nagendra, a graduate student from Bangalore who had been living in London.

Her father, K. Nagendra, was quoted by the Press Trust of India news agency as saying that his daughter had been chosen to dance in director Danny Boyle's ceremony, and he speculated that she might have been asked by organizers to escort India's team into the stadium.

Bedi said India's acting chef de mission, P.K.M. Raja, had sent games organizers an official letter of complaint.

London organizing chief Sebastian Coe insisted the woman had not posed a threat to the ceremony. He told reporters she was "a cast member who clearly got slightly overexcited."

Annual Multi Trip and Single Trip Travel Insurance - the Famous ...

cra9u4f0ma Posted by cra9u4f0ma on 1 hour ago

Such a tough issue has appeared in each traveller?s mind at least one time. So, prior to making selection you ought to each time know advantages and drawbacks of both annual multi trip and single trip cover.

What does keep money? Every person tries to save. We all are aware of that it is less expensive by the dozen. So, you must consider and plan in advance in order to save money. If you don?t travel much therefore you doubtless don?t need an annual multi-trip policy. On the other hand, if you are about to travel at least 3 times (e.g. small business visits, working as a volunteer, weekend holidays, collaborating in public and sport events abroad et cetera.) or you have relatives anywhere out of the motherland, whom you desire to go to see repeatedly, you must better think of an annual multi-trip travel insurance. It will definitely cut your costs twice.

What saves time? It is clear that it is quicker to purchase a multi-trip certificate just the once than to get it every single time you want it. It happens that individuals fail to remember the options they have chosen for their previous trip so that they start comparing the information again. Getting annual multi trip cover allows you look through your certificate any time you desire going on your e-mail. As a consequence, you purchase it just the once and stay relaxed the rest of the period.

What is better for different types of actions? It depends on you. It doesn?t matter which type of journey you select, anyway you may perhaps add additional coverage for dangerous activities, personal possessions and other choices. Both of these travel cover are all-round.

What is the difference in the coverage of insurance plans?

Most holiday insurance policies cover up worldwide visits. Still some travel insurance organizations offer nice deals. In particular, when arranging annual multi-trip insurance certificate for certain time you can get winter sports coverage totally free.

What is the age difference? At this time you must be well thought-out and precise. This thing varies depending on each single travel insurance company. On the other hand, single trip travel insurance policies more likely have larger age limit than annual multi-trip insurance policies. Yet there are insurance businesses that propose very good conditions for seniors.

What is vital concerning the travel insurance period?

When arranging any certificate, it is essential to select an immediate date. Otherwise, you won?t be insured for the abandonment of your future journeys. Majority doesn?t consider somewhat might affect their voyage. In spite of this, such cases as strikes may well be the reasons of the tour abandonment in the last days before a departure.

Accordingly, again, remember, planning is really vital. Understand that buying annual multi-trip travel insurance certificate more likely save your time, money and offer you some good deals. So, make an effort to be conscious to win, not to lose.

We recommend that you pick an immediate start date because this will ensure that you are insured for the cancellation of any pre-booked travel. Or else, if you select the departure date of your earliest travel and you ought to cancel prior to your departure, you will not be covered.

Anabolic Cooking - Build Large Muscles

    anabolic cooking
One of the biggest mistakes of bodybuilders and any others who are just looking to build large muscles is that they focus too much on their workouts. Obviously their workouts are a major part of building muscle but just as important to the process is the food that you throw down your gullet. You need to feed your muscles. In the past trying to come up with meal plans to feed your muscles has been difficult but that is no longer a problem thanks to Anabolic Cooking.

    Download Anabolic Cooking Now

One of the typical problem for people who are eating to gain muscle is that they end up gaining a lot of weight fast. Unfortunately, much of this weight is fat. This happens because they do not have a good nutritional plan. If, however, you do have a great nutrition plan then you will be much more likely to pack on muscle and to develop the body that you are looking for.
This is why Dave Ruel developed the Anabolic Cooking program. It was his goal to help others to accomplish their goals of having the body of their dreams and packing on large amount of muscle.

But you don?t have to be a competitive bodybuilder to benefit from Anabolic Cooking. If you are simply interested in your health then it is for you. The pace that we keep these days drives us to simply grab ?something quick? which in most cases is not a healthy option. Many do not even have a clue of how to prepare good healthy food. This is quite obvious if you look at society as a whole. So many people are much fatter than they should be. This not only affects the attractiveness of their appearance but it greatly jeopardizes their health. I am sure that you don?t want your children eating a lot of junk food. If you are truly concerned about your children?s well being then you will want to steer them toward healthy eating and steer them away from food that will make them fat and put them at risk of numerous diseases.

So what exactly does the Anabolic Cooking program contain? I am glad you asked. Below are some of the features:

    • More than 200 recipes to enable you to pack on large amount of muscle and to eat a healthy diet

(AP) ? Preliminary estimates show that Saturday night's NBC telecast scored the highest ratings for the first evening of an Olympics competition outside of the United States.

The Nielsen company said Sunday that its measurement of the nation's largest cities showed ratings for the Olympics telecast were up 8 percent over opening night in Beijing four years ago. A fuller measurement of viewership is expected later on Sunday.

NBC was the target of many Twitter complaints on Saturday for not telecasting the marquee men's swimming competition live, instead showing it on tape delay in prime-time. But prime-time ratings are the report card that the company cares about the most and, thus far, viewers are responding to the strategy.

Did a ?Follow Friday? list reveal the name of Mitt Romney?s VP choice?

The head of Romney's search for a running mate thinks you should follow a small, select group of Republicans this??

With the 2012 Olympic Games now officially underway in England, it can be easy to forget that 2012 is also notable for being a presidential election year... at least for the next few weeks. Well, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney doesn't want you to stop thinking about the close November election. That's why Beth Myers, the person named to head up his search for a vice presidential nominee, took to social network Twitter today to suggest you follow a small group of Republican conservatives, one of whom is likely to be named as Romney's VP pick in a few weeks' time.

Myers has only tweeted a total of three times, and two of them were shared above. That is leading a number of political observers to interpret Myers' tweets as the Romney campaign's vice presidential short list ? the big political names still under consideration for joining Mitt Romney on the November ballot. By announcing the full list, it appears that Romney is trying to avoid the kind of national shock that arose in 2008 when Sen. John McCain picked a largely unknown Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin from out of nowhere to be his running mate.

The names in each of the tweets are somewhat familiar to those who follow politics. Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan have frequently been named as a possible Romney picks, as have the relatively young Florida Senator Marco Rubio and bombastic New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. There are a number of female names in consideration too: New Mexico Gov. Susan Martinez, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte.

Opening Ceremony London 2012: Did director take shot at US on health care?

The director of the opening ceremony for the London 2012 Games created a production for the 99 percent, it seems. For an Olympic movement that hates controversy, that is unusual.

    By Mark Sappenfield,?Staff writer / July 28, 2012

Actors lying on beds meant to represent Britain's National Health Service (NHS) perform during the opening ceremony at the 2012 Summer Olympics Friday in London.

Of all the things to laud in Britain's long history, the director of the opening ceremonies for the London Olympics chose for his second act ... universal health care.?

    ' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
    ' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

    '; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Yes, that "NHS" spelled out by hospital beds in Friday's opening ceremonies stands for Britain's National Health Service ? the government-run universal health-care system that director Danny Boyle called an "amazing thing to celebrate."

Bob Costas, you're not in Kansas anymore.?

It is more than a little bit presumptuous to imagine that Mr. Boyle was sending coded political messages to American voters who can't hear the words "universal" and "health care" in the same sentence without invoking the Commerce Clause. But that doesn't mean Boyle didn't have a message.

He insisted that message was not political, but rather a reflection of the values that British society holds dear and emanates to the world.?

"One of the reasons we put the NHS in the show is that everyone is aware of how important the NHS is to everybody in this country," he said at a press conference earlier in the day.?"One of the core values of our society is that it doesn't matter who you are, you will get treated the same in terms of health care."

But not everyone agreed that the message had no hint of politics.?"NHS beds dominated the infield for so long that it seemed more a political message than a tribute to our hardworking nurses," wrote the Daily Mail, adding that the spectacle "at times bordered on left-wing propaganda."

Repeatedly, Boyle made it clear that the ceremonies were his vision, and that London organizers gave him enormous?freedom to shape them in his image. In that case, it should hardly be surprising that the director of films that chronicled heroin users ("Trainspotting") and the Indian underclass ("Slumdog Millionaire") might craft a performance from a working-class perspective.?

Is that political? That is in the eye of the beholder.?

But it is hard to escape at least some small sense of advocacy in Boyle's second act, particularly after a cigar-chomping elite?let loose the gluttony of unchecked industry on the idyllic English countryside in the first act.?This was, it seemed, an opening ceremony for the 99 percent.?

In some respects, that gave it a poignancy beyond opening ceremonies of Olympic past ? Boyle actually had a cutting message, whatever you thought of it. But for an Olympic movement that has long avoided even the scent of controversy ? even forcing cities to ban civic protests during the Games ? it was an unusual departure.

LONDON ? Tina Charles scored 14 points and Angel McCoughtry added 13 to lead the U.S. women's basketball team to a sloppy 81-56 victory over Croatia on Saturday in their Olympic opener.

Coach Geno Auriemma had said he was hoping that the Americans could play a style of basketball that would be entertaining and help grow the game internationally. That didn't happen Saturday as the U.S. struggled for the first three quarters before pulling away to win their 34th consecutive Olympic contest.

The victory was far different than the 54-point pounding the Americans gave Croatia a week earlier.

Despite missing its first 14 shots, Croatia hung tough for the first 30 minutes before the Americans finally could pull away.

The U.S., which has dominated its opponents en route to the last four gold medals, only led 53-49 early in the fourth quarter before a 16-0 run put the game out of reach.

Tormek sharpener question. - Family Woodworking

Well, as usual, I have to put in my two-cents worth.

Several people who had used both, told me that they preferred the Jet slow-speed sharpener to the Tormek. All of them also said that they preferred the Tormek gouge jig to the Jet (it fits the Jet perfectly).

I purchased the Jet. There is a very sad and a very wonderful story behind that. However, I will skip it here (you didn't know that I could do that did you).

Final result (the way I do things now, a couple years later):

1---I always sharpen my flat chisels and plane irons with a WorkSharp 3000. It is so easy, so fast, so sharp that anything else feels cumbersome and inefficient. Depending on how dull I let the tool become, I can resharpen to a mirror, shave your arm sharpness in 10 to 30 seconds. If the edge had a small nick in it, the time would get up into the 2 to 4 minute bracket. If it had a big nick, I would probably go to the dry grinder or work from the top on the WorkSharp 3000.

Please understand---I have absolutely no sharpening genes in my body. I never had a "Wow" sharp tool in my life until I had the 3000.

2---I always change blade shape with my dry 1725 RPM grinder using white stones. It is fast and easy to get the general shape (actually fairly darn accurate shape). I have a water cup built into my grinder table. I use it after every pass and so I have no problems losing temper.

3---Most of the time I do very slight regrinds and finish sharpening of gouges on the Jet. However, I just use it as a Slow Speed Wet Stone. I use a simple home made Wolverine type setup to sharpen gouges on the Jet. The home made unit was made from scrap. It probably took 30 minutes to build. It probably took another 45 minutes to find the "right" piece of scrap and lay it out so I could use it with all of my gouges, cut-offs, etc. Any 10 inch slow speed, wet unit would work fine.

I do prefer the 10 inch wheels. 8 inch give me a little more concave surface than I like. This is definitely not a big problem. If my wheel was 8 inch, I would use it happily.

Would I buy another Jet or Tormek? Absolutely not.

I do sharpen everything around the house: shop tools, Myrna's precious and expensive knives, hatchets, axes, weed pluckers, hoes, shovels and scissors. However, I only do the very mildest of work on scissors because I can purchase a new pair for very little money and I am not really set up for scissors.

    Enjoy,

Drop the medicine can reduce colorectal cancer | Chircovskii Dance ...

In the era of targeted therapy in oncology very expensive, it is important to look for cheap labor that could be active in preventing cancer and then have a huge impact on public health, Decensi said in a statement.A small study suggests that taking allopurinol, a drug that has been used to treat gout for over 20 years, could reduce the growth of colon cancer and reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Decensi conducted a clinical study of 73 patients with colorectal polyps, which were treated with allopurinol between 2006 and 2010. The researchers collected samples of tissue samples from patients to compare normal and abnormal levels of Ki67. The research team reported that allopurinol is a very safe medication, and if we consider only a few side effects have been reported ? three mild gastrointestinal events.

Allopurinol, sold under the brand names and Lopurin Zyloprim reduces the activity of reactive oxygen metabolites. Previous research has also shown that patients treated with allopurinol gout had a reduced risk of colorectal cancer, one of the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men and women in the U. S. According to 2010 statistics from the American Cancer Society, there was about 102 900 new cases of colon cancer and 39,670 new cases of rectal cancer.

Even before the study was completed, an initial analysis of samples of normal tissue showed no difference between patients treated with placebo and those taking allopurinol. Among the first 13 patients enrolled in the study, the results showed that levels of Ki67 in normal tissues was doubled in patients taking placebo, compared with an increase of only 5 percent in patients treated with either dose of allopurinol.

The researcher Andrea Decensi, MD, director of the department of medical oncology at the Galliera Hospital in Genoa, Italy, presented the results of the study of the American Association ninth annual Frontiers cancer research at the Conference on the Prevention of Cancer Research held in Philadelphia.

According to the authors, the study found that children stating a dislike of school were 2.5 times more likely to have sexual intercourse.

Dislike of school also strongly predicted alcohol use.

Domain Names and Web Hosting ? Basics You Must Know | domain ...

Posted in domain name exchange by admin - Jul 26, 2012

Internet address? Domain name? www dot something? There are probably no words in today?s everyday life that are used more often that these. Internet has entered each and every aspect of our lives and is considered to be one of the biggest inventions of all times.

Still, how many people really understand the value of domain name; that part of internet address that follows http://www.? Better yet, how many people HAVE Internet address with their own domain name? Do people realize that their domain name might be the biggest asset they actually have?

If you run a business, it?s no news anymore that having an Internet address for customers to find you is an imperative. Having an Internet address with the business related domain name is almost necessary for online success. It?s your ID in the online world.

And then there are personal web pages i.e. Internet addresses. With continuous growth of Internet, more and more people start their own personal web pages to share their personal interests, hobbies etc. They simply wish to mark their presence on the Internet and to do that easily they tend to personalize their domains.

The most common way of getting your own domain name is by getting it from a free web hosting provider. However, the risk of doing that is far greater than people think. What it comes down to is that you simply DO NOT OWN your web site / Internet address / domain name. In other words, if that free web hosting provider runs out of business, you LOSE EVERYTHING. Another big obstacle when choosing your own domain name is the fact that most of the TLDs names (top level domains such as.com,.org and.biz) are already taken.

    Luckily, there?s an alternative?

For almost a decade now, people are using the benefits of being a.ws domain owners. By registering with GDI (Global Domains International), one of the fastest growing INC 500 companies today, you get to see the true meaning of ?value for money? principle. For $ 10,- per month you get to chose your own domain name, but more importantly ? you get to OWN it, as well as your 10 pages web site, 10 email addresses, a web site builder and an email forwarding service.

If this still doesn?t seam good enough to you, GDI offers all the above as an actual product for you to pass on i.e. to sell to other people as a GDI Affiliate. Should you choose that, there?s an outstanding ongoing support system in place and incredible 5 levels affiliate commissions program. So, you have a safe and professional web hosting package on one side and a highly demanded product / service to earn from, on the other. If you?re familiar with Affiliate business at all, you?ll recognize the power of promoting a highly demanded product that requires no warehousing, but is instantly delivered.

All in all, with Internet being everybody?s business today, GDI and its.ws are turning into and therefore rightfully being called A NEW.COM BOOM and the most reliable MLM system today.

So, do you have your own.ws domain yet?

Organically Cooked: Doing it like TGI Friday's

Greek Food Blogs is organising a Greek food bloggers' cooking event, in conjunction with TGI Friday's Greece. The challenge is to create a recipe for TGI Friday's Greece that will be used in its main menu if chosen by the judges. TGI Friday's menu is based on American recipes and cooking techniques, which are radically different to my own cooking style.

Before you submit your recipe, you have to learn to cook in the style of TGI Friday's. By looking through the TGI Friday's Greece menu, I notice a heavy emphasis on meat-based dishes that are accompanied by a range of colourful salads and toppings. Most importantly, the meats are usually served with some kind of spicy sauce or piquante dip. That's quite different to what I cook in my kitchen on a daily basis, which is usually based on seasonal local food, not very much meat and what our garden supplies. But I liked the idea of a foodistic challenge, especially now that the garden is so full of high quality fresh produce.

Upon request, a mini cookbook based on TGI Friday's Greece menu was sent to me, containing recipes for TGI Friday menu staples such as wings, ribs and fajitas. My biggest worry about cooking American food in my Mediterranean kitchen was that I would not have the right ingredients at hand. When trying out a new recipe, I often look to replace unusual ingredients with local seasonal products, and prefer not to spend money on imported non-Greek food. However, there are some items that are always found in my kitchen (eg soya sauce) because I use them often, but there are a number of items that I don't stock at all (eg cider vinegar), while a number of items (eg fresh coriander) are difficult to source where I live. I knew I wouldn't be able to source all the ingredients in the recipes supplied to me, so I decided to adapt the recipes to suit my Mediterranean kitchen supplies.

I also set myself an additional facet to the challenge: can I cook a new recipe, learn a new cooking technique, use whatever is in my kitchen, cook the meal after work with no previous preparation and keep the meal frugal, without compromising on taste and quality? I printed out the recipe (on my new printer-scanner, after being dutifully served by my former eight-year-old model) as soon as I got home from work just after 3pm, and checked the ingredients and method. (Then I whipped up a boureki and a batch of tomato sauce, drove off to our fields to pick a crate of oranges and fill up our empties with ice-cold spring water, and then returned home to take the kids to the beach, while the boureki in the oven and the tomato sauce on the element were cooking at the lowest possible point, all part of a typical lazy Greek's summer routine.)

I began cooking the meal at about 8pm. I decided to cook the wings recipe, replacing the wings (a cheap commodity in Crete) with some tasty German sausages that I had in my fridge, whose expiry date was due very soon. This meant that I could cheat on time, because the wings needed special preparation and a longer cooking time. The sausages were simply drained and dry-fried on a pan, so that they became crispy-burnt on some parts.
The recipe then called for a pico de gallo, which sounded very exotic, but it was actually a fresh colourful salad, consisting of tomato, peppers and onions of all colours. It just so happened that on the previous day, I had harvested a number of coloured peppers from our garden - how convenient was THAT?! While the sausages were cooking, I set about chopping up the salad ingredients into little cubes. All they needed was to soak in a little lemon juice, before being strained when the time came to use them. The recipe also called for fresh pineapple pieces as part of the salad, something which we never buy: fresh fruit is never missing in our house in the form of oranges, apricots, melon and watermelon (we don;t grow the last two). I omitted this step, but made up for the colour (maybe not the sweet taste) with the brilliant yellow pepper.

The recipe also called for a spicy meat glaze made with whiskey. This was the most daunting part for me: I've never made such a sauce before. The ingredients for the sauce included tabasco sauce, soya sauce, onion, cayenne pepper, brown sugar, whiskey, cider vinegar and beef stock. The cider vinegar was replaced with a light home-made red wine vinegar, and the beef stock was omitted (I simply added water). The point was to make a sauce as thick as syrup, which would be used both as a sauce and a topping. The ingredients needed about 20 minutes to reduce to a syrup.

The final look of the plate involved skwering the chicken wings (so I skewered the sausages),cooking them in some of the syrupy sauce, plating them with more sauce and topping them with the salad. This all looked good, but the plate looked a little empty, as I was serving this dish as a main evening meal and not an appetiser. I had some mini-pita bread rounds in the freezer, which I toasted lightly int he same pan I cooked the sausages. I also have a lot of eggplant in the garden at the moment, so I sliced a small one and fried it. (The aubergines were sitting on the kitchen worktop for three days, and had shrivelled slightly, which makes cooking them much easier, as they did not need to be salted and drained - Cretan garden-grown aubergines re much sweeter than commercially grown aubergine).??
    ?

Just after 9pm, the dish was completed, and the plate looked full. It was very tasty, as judged by my eaters, who asked me if I could make it more often. Yes, I suppose I could, although I wasn't happy about the addition of sugar in our main meals. I wonder if I could make the same sauce with honey as a healthy alternative.

Post-script: My husband particularly enjoyed this meal, and I was very glad I to have been able to offer it to him - he'd been stuck on the roof of our house all morning under a fiercely hot sun (we're renovating, and in Crete, renovating usually entails the house owner taking an active part in the work), and was too hot and tired to eat at lunch time (which consisted of a leftover meal - not very enticing if you are too tired to eat). After leaving for work in the afternoon, he realised that he would either crash the car or fall asleep at the wheel if he continued working, and he was surprised to find this meal ready and waiting for him. Just another day in the life of another lazy Greek.

    Cell phone financial identity theft

ScienceDaily (July 26, 2012) ? While the cell phone is an amazingly useful device, using it for banking -- and consumers are increasingly using mobile phones as banking tools -- can lead to identity theft and other financial crimes, if reasonable precautions aren't taken.

"Anyone who has access to your cell phone has access to your identity in a few clicks," says Elizabeth Baker, an assistant professor at Wake Forest University and an expert in information system security issues. "Often, credit card companies limit your financial responsibility if your card is stolen and fraud is committed. This is not true for your checking and savings bank accounts. Money fraudulently withdrawn can be costly."

Baker offers the following tips for protecting yourself from mobile financial theft.

Never store financial information on your cell phone -- logins, passwords, account numbers, Social Security numbers, etc. -- not even in a mobile banking app. If you lose your phone, whoever finds it has immediate access to your account if your login credentials are stored. A thief can use the app and get your account info to withdraw your money. Big hazard.

Never text message any financial information from your cell phone. Text messages are not secure modes of communication, and all of the texts that you send are logged in your phone. A hacker or thief could access your phone and the text message logs to easily find your financial information.

Lock your phone or have a way to delete the information on your phone remotely. According to a survey last year by data security firm Sophos, 22 percent of respondents have lost their phones, while 70 percent didn't use password protection. Use a password.

Check your accounts frequently for suspicious activity. Every few days, if not everyday, you should check on your money. Since you will be the one without the money and with scarce opportunity to get any restitution, it is important to be on top of the account to make sure that nothing unexpected is happening.

Teenagers and young adults are particularly vulnerable to mobile identity theft because they are comfortable sharing information through their phones, Baker says. Make sure to discuss these dangers with your teens when they open their first bank accounts and monitor their accounts regularly.
