NASA telescope detects 'bonanza' of humongous black holes

NASA's?Wide-field Infrared Survey telescope has spotted millions of 'supermassive' black holes gorging on matter, says the space agency.?

The cosmic find comes from data collected by NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey (WISE) telescope, which scanned the entire sky in infrared light from December 2009 to February 2011. The full catalog of observations by?WISE?during its mission was publicly released in March, and astronomers are still poring through this celestrial trove for discoveries.

"WISE has found a bonanza of?black holes?in the universe," astronomer Daniel Stern of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., said during a news briefing today (Aug. 29). WISE turned up about three times as many?black holes?as have been found by comparable surveys in visible light, offering up a total of 2.5 million new sources across the sky.

These black holes aren't the average tiny, dense objects created by the collapse of dead stars, but rather humongous "supermassive" black holes that have been caught feasting on matter falling into them. Such active black holes are known as quasars, and are some of the brightest objects in the universe, because of light released by the infalling matter. [Photos: Millions of Black Holes Seen by WISE Telescope]

"We expected that there should be this large population of hidden quasars in the universe, but WISE can now identify them across the sky," Stern said. "We think these quasars are really important for shaping how galaxies look today."

Cosmic Hot DOGs

In addition to this haul of gorging black holes, WISE has turned up a smaller population of rarer objects researchers are dubbing "hot DOGs," for hot, dust-obscured galaxies.

These galaxies are thought to be extremely bright, but appear very faint to us because their light is shrouded by dust.

"It is actually the most obscured objects in the WISE sky that are among the brightest objects in the universe," said Peter Eisenhardt, a WISE project scientist at JPL. "They're definitely a different type of beast than we?ve seen before."

The?hot DOGs observed by WISE?number about 1,000, and are mostly spotted from very far away, meaning they existed in the early days of the universe, because their light has taken billions of years to travel to Earth.

Samsung Galaxy Note II coming to ThreeUK and O2 later in the year

Samsung Galaxy Note II coming to Three,

We've been speaking to the big five UK mobile networks, finding out where British phablet fans can get their Galaxy Note II fix. So far, only ThreeUK (after the break) and O2 have confirmed they'll be carrying the device when it arrives later in the year, while T-Mobile and Orange said they didn't have any details for us yet. Most cryptically, Vodafone's response was that it "isn't involved in this," so we figure we'll have to sit tight for more concrete news. If anything changes. we'll let you know.

Calorie limits don't extend lifespan but might keep you healthier

For 75 years, scientists have documented a curious fact: If rats and mice eat 30% to 40% fewer calories than usual, they live 15% to 40% longer than is typical for their species. The observation has offered humans hope that our own maximum lifespan could one day be extended, permitting people to live well past their 100th birthday.

A new study in monkeys pours cold water on that notion ? while at the same time offering some heartening health news.

Among a colony of rhesus monkeys tracked for more than 20 years, animals whose calories were restricted to 30% below normal lived no longer on average than monkeys whose eating was unrestricted, scientists found. But the diet did offer clear benefits, notably in warding off cancer.

It appears that "we are seeing a separation between what we call 'healthspan' from 'lifespan' ? they are not hand in hand," said Rafael de Cabo, an experimental gerontologist at the National Institute on Aging in Baltimore and senior author of the new study.

The report, published online Wednesday by the journal Nature, suggests that what has proven true for rodents and various other animals may not hold true for primates ? humans included ? at least under the conditions that were studied. It will likely disappoint those hundreds of people in the U.S. who practice a strict regimen of calorie restriction in hopes of postponing their appointment with the Grim Reaper.

But the findings also have some researchers scratching their heads. The results are quite different from a 2009 report of monkeys in a colony in Wisconsin that found a clear survival edge from age-related diseases like diabetes, cancer and heart disease in calorie-restricted animals. That study also saw a trend toward longer life for monkeys on the diet when all causes of death were considered.

Figuring out whether differences in diet, the animals' genetic makeup or something else caused the results to diverge could offer important clues to the way that calorie restriction ? and aging ? work, De Cabo said.

The new study tracked 121 male and female monkeys at the National Institutes of Health's animal center in Maryland starting in 1987. One group of 35 animals ? the "old onset" group ? were 16 to 23 years old when the study began. (Rhesus monkeys mature around the age of 4 or 5 and live to 27, on average, in captivity). The rest were in a group that included juvenile and adolescent monkeys as well as younger adults up to the age of 14.

All the monkeys received the same food diet, but the control animals could eat as much as they wanted during daylight hours. The rest were limited to only 70% of what they ate before the experiment began.

In the older group, there was no overall difference in ages of death between calorie-restricted and free-eating animals. That was true when all causes of death were considered together as well as when deaths from age-related illnesses were calculated separately, the authors found.

Longevity under both conditions was above the norm, however. And four of the older animals in the calorie-restricted group and one from the control group have broken rhesus monkey longevity records by living beyond 40 years.

That fact especially intrigues gerontologist Rick Weindruch of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, author of the earlier monkey study.

"To me this is really important ? that five animals either reached or exceeded what has been thought to be the maximum lifespan of the species," Weindruch said.

Among the younger animals, the scientists didn't find any survival edge for dieting animals either. But they did find reduced rates of diabetes and stark differences in the cancer rates.

So far, no monkey in the calorie-restricted group has been diagnosed with cancer, De Cabo said, whereas six cases have occurred in the controls and are believed to have been the cause of death of five of them. That is in line with rodent studies, which have also found that calorie restriction seems to ward off cancer.

There were other differences, too. Calorie-restricted monkeys weighed less and looked younger than the animals that ate freely. They also appeared "younger" in some metabolic respects, with lower blood levels of triglycerides and glucose in the old group and lower cholesterol levels in males of both age classes.

The fact that diseases of old age can be warded off even if lifespan isn't necessarily extended suggests "that health and longevity are not the same thing," said Steven N. Austad, a biogerontologist at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio who wrote a commentary accompanying the report.

This could be considered encouraging, he added: "In the ideal scenario, we'd stay healthy to a relatively decent age and then we'd suddenly fall over at the appropriate time. That would be a good thing. What we don't want is people living longer and longer in worse and worse health."

Scientists aren't sure how to explain why the new study produced different results than the Wisconsin study, in which only 13% of the calorie-restricted monkeys died due to some age-related disease compared with 37% of the control monkeys.

But they have some ideas. Chief among them: The food served was very different, even though the overall amounts of protein, carbohydrates and fats were similar in both studies.

The Wisconsin diet consisted of purified ingredients mixed together and was high in sugar, perhaps explaining why so many of the free-feeding monkeys in that study developed diabetes. The Maryland monkeys ate a diet made from natural ingredients that contains more plant micronutrients and omega-3 fatty acids, among other items.

As a result, all of the monkeys in the new study may have been healthier overall, regardless of whether they were calorie-restricted or not.

Though the final word on whether calorie restriction extends lifespan is not in ? nearly 50% of the younger monkeys are still alive ? the authors wrote that they are unlikely to find a survival edge when all is said and done. But it is always possible they will, De Cabo said, especially if the cancer difference continues to mount.

Even if the strategy turns out not to be the elixir of youth, that wouldn't devastate 54-year-old St. Louis resident Joe Cordell, an avid practitioner of calorie restriction for the last 10 years.

"I would like to live to the outer limits of what human beings normally live," said the 5-foot-9, 129-pound lawyer who eats berries, apple peel and walnuts for breakfast and favors giant salads for dinner.

But, he added, "I would be delighted to take 90 to 95 years without cancer, without heart disease, without diabetes or other chronic illnesses. To me, that would have warranted this."

Everybody has the desire to live life with honor and dignity. At the old age, this desire becomes even stronger. This is the main reason why senior citizens prefer to lead an independent existence away from their sons and daughters. It sounds good but one needs to be practical. After all, one cannot lead a lonely life like Robinson Crusoe for a very long period!

There are both merits and demerits of an independent existence. These days you have the option of eliminating the demerits to some extent with private home help for the elderly. This type of help can prove to be a boon especially for the working couple who do not have much time for their parents. In the presence of private home care services, the need for relocating to a health care center or a rehabilitation center does not arise. Therefore, the elder members of your family can enjoy the comfort of their home without much worry. Moreover, a stress-free existence will keep them happy and healthy at least for the last few years of their lives.

Nowadays, professional home care for elderly services takes into account almost everything from the need of transportation to grooming, housekeeping, meal preparation, and medication. The services are extremely flexible and can be availed 24x7 or on an emergency basis. Under special circumstances, you can even avail overnight caretakers to meet your requirement. A care giving center can also provide you trained professionals for handling patients suffering from Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Some caregivers have the knowledge and skill to motivate a patient suffering from a mental illness like depression.

Private home care of the elderly also includes some of the daily activities such as letter-writing, organizing mails in the inbox, arranging for medical appointments and their reminders, maintaining calendars, and supervising the diet. Therefore, these services are designed to make the life of your loved ones easy in all possible way. Besides, the home care service providers give the elderly people an opportunity to socialize. People from various professional backgrounds work for these service centers full time or as volunteers. So the old can throw away their loneliness by interacting with this interesting group of people, ready to provide help in every possible way. Even if an interesting person from the center comes just once a week, it would provide enough entertainment to that individual who does not get much opportunity to socialize.

Some tasks like taking care of the pet, gardening, washing clothes and simple meal planning becomes difficult when people get old. By taking the workload, the caregivers can easily fix these difficulties for that elderly person. Caring for the elderly is a noble task and most of the home care providers understand that and act accordingly. However, sometimes it becomes very difficult to fathom whether a aged person really requires help or not. In that scenario, it would be best to bring an experienced caregiver on a casual visit for assessing the actual condition of that elderly person.

St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal, left, makes a throw over third baseman David Freese but Washington Nationals' Ian Desmond was safe at first during the sixth inning of a baseball game, Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, in Washington. The Nationals won 8-1. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)

(AP) ? The St. Louis Cardinals lost their third straight game ? and maybe their All-Star shortstop, too.

Rafael Furcal might return home from the team's road trip for further tests after straining his right elbow in an 8-1 loss to the Washington Nationals on Thursday night.

Furcal was asked whether he was concerned the injury could end his season.

"Sort of," he said. "It's bad."

With the defending champion Cardinals in the thick of the NL wild-card chase, Furcal left after making back-to-back throws to home and second in the sixth inning. He said he felt a pop and then tingling. He will have an MRI on Friday.

"My wish is nothing crazy," said Furcal, who has never had elbow problems before.

The Cardinals, shut out in consecutive games by Pittsburgh before arriving in Washington, got on the board when Bryan Anderson led off the eighth with a double and scored on third baseman Ryan Zimmerman's throwing error. That ended the Cardinals' streak of 28 scoreless innings, their longest drought since going 33 innings without scoring in 1995.

"Nothing we can put our finger on," manager Mike Matheny said. "No explanation at this point."

Jaime Garcia (3-6) allowed six runs over 5 1-3 innings. St. Louis has a half-game lead over the Pirates in the race for the NL's second wild-card spot.

Furcal, a speedy switch-hitter, is batting .264 with five home runs and 49 RBIs.

"You can't really describe it as losing a piece right now until we get all the information," Matheny said. "He's been a phenomenal part of this team. He's had a great season."

Bryce Harper hit his third home run in two games, Jayson Werth homered for the first time since May, and Edwin Jackson struck out 10 for the Nationals.

Jackson (8-9) was so dominant over eight innings that three of his strikeouts required throws to first because the Cardinals were chasing balls in the dirt.

The victory moved the NL East-leading Nationals 5? games ahead of the idle Atlanta Braves. Washington's recent five-game losing streak has tightened the race again, but manager Davey Johnson's team has come out of the funk with 16 runs in two games.

A day after his first two-homer game, Harper hit a drive so hard that it short-hopped the back wall of the Nationals' bullpen and bounced all the way back over the right-field fence. It was a two-run shot in the first inning, and the teenager followed by hitting the ball even farther in the third ? only to have it caught on the warning track near the 402-foot mark in straightaway center.

Some in the crowd gave him a standing ovation as he returned to the dugout.

NOTES: St. Louis LF Matt Holliday singled in the first for his 1,500th career hit. ... Cardinals C Yadier Molina, run over by Pittsburgh's Josh Harrison on Tuesday, was medically cleared to play just a few hours before Thursday's game. He went 0 for 2 with a walk. "I really didn't want to pass on the struggles that I had and automatically throw them on to him," said Matheny, whose playing career ended in 2007 due to a concussion. "Just because I had a soft squash doesn't mean that he does. It's not fair to him. The conversation we had was, 'Hey, if you pass the tests and the doctors say it's OK, I'm not going to stop you. But I'm going to be extra cautious, because I know more about this than any one person should know.'" ... Gio Gonzalez starts for the Nationals on Friday night, facing Adam Wainwright.

Pakistani officials confirm death of key militant

(AP) ? Pakistani intelligence officials confirmed Thursday that a U.S. drone strike last week near the Afghan border killed the son of the founder of the powerful Haqqani militant network, a major blow to one of the most feared groups fighting American troops in Afghanistan.

Badruddin Haqqani, who has been described as the organization's day-to-day operations commander, was killed Aug. 24 in one of three strikes that hit militant hideouts in the Shawal Valley in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal area, said two senior intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

A U.S. official confirmed that Badruddin Haqqani was killed in a CIA drone strike. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the drone program publicly.

The presence of the mostly Afghan Haqqani network in North Waziristan has been a major source of friction between Pakistan and the U.S. The Obama administration has repeatedly demanded that Pakistan prevent the group from using its territory to launch attacks in Afghanistan, but Islamabad has refused ? a stance many analysts believe is driven by the country's strong historical ties to the Haqqani network's founder, Jalaluddin Haqqani.

The Pakistani intelligence officials didn't specify which strike on Aug. 24 killed Badruddin, but said he was leaving a hideout when the U.S. missiles hit. The confirmation of his death came from their sources within the Taliban, which is allied with the Haqqani network, and agents on the ground, they said. But neither the officials nor their sources have actually seen Badruddin's body.

Pakistani intelligence officials previously said they were 90 percent sure Badruddin was killed in a drone strike in a different part of North Waziristan on Aug. 21. It's unclear what caused the discrepancy.

Afghanistan's intelligence agency said several days ago that its operatives had confirmed Badruddin's death. A senior Taliban commander has also confirmed the militant's death.

A Taliban spokesman in Afghanistan, Zabiullah Mujahid, has however rejected reports of Badruddin's death, calling them "propaganda of the enemy."

The U.S. does not often comment publicly on the covert CIA drone program in Pakistan.

The areas where the American drone strikes generally occur are extremely remote and dangerous, making it difficult to verify a particular person's death.

Badruddin was considered a vital part of the Haqqani structure.

The U.S. State Department has designated Badruddin, along with his father and brothers ? Nasiruddin and Sirajuddin ? as terrorists. The State Department said in May 2011 that Badruddin sits on the Miram Shah Shura, a group that controls all Haqqani network activities and coordinates attacks in southeastern Afghanistan.

Badruddin is also believed to have been responsible for the 2008 kidnapping of New York Times reporter David Rohde, the department said.

After their father effectively retired in 2005, Badruddin and his brother Sirajuddin expanded the network into kidnapping and extortion, both highly profitable for the organization, according to a recent report by the West Point, N.Y.-based Combating Terrorism Center. Afghan intelligence authorities have released intercepts of Badruddin orchestrating an attack against the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul in 2011, the CTC said.

The U.S. has long viewed the Haqqani network as one of the biggest threats to U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan as well as the country's long term stability.

The Pakistani military has refused to target the Haqqani network, saying its troops are stretched too thin fighting militants at war with the state in other parts of the tribal region. But many analysts believe the military views the group as an important potential ally in Afghanistan after foreign forces withdraw.

Also on Thursday, Pakistan security officials arrested the founder of one of the country's most virulently anti-Shiite militant groups, Laskhar-e-Jangvi, for allegedly making a speech that spread sectarian hatred.

A police official in Lahore, Maroof Afzal, said police arrested Malik Ishaq as he returned from a religious pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. He was arrested because of a speech he made during Ramadan that authorities said incited sectarian hatred.

Laskhar-e-Jangvi allies itself with al-Qaida and the Taliban. The group is blamed for scores of attacks on Shiites, regarded as infidels, and on Pakistani and U.S. interests. Police arrested Ishaq in 1997, and he was accused in more than 200 criminal cases including the killing of 70 Shiites. But the prosecution could never prove the case, in part because of witness and judge intimidation, and he went free in 2011.

The arrest comes as the country is undergoing a surge of sectarian attacks, many by Sunni Muslims who view Shiites as infidels. Much of the violence has come in Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan province.

Gunmen shot to death a Shiite Muslim judge along with his bodyguard and driver Thursday in Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan, said senior police official Wazir Khan Nasir. The police suspect it was a sectarian killing, he said.

Also Thursday, fighting continued for a seventh day between security forces and Taliban militants who came from Afghanistan to attack an area in northwest Pakistan, officials said. The fighting in the Bajur tribal area killed eight militants, two anti-Taliban militiamen, a soldier and a female civilian, said a local political official, Nazimeen Khan.

A total of 73 militants, 14 militiamen, 10 soldiers and 11 civilians, including six women and four children, have been killed in the week of fighting in the Salarzai area of Bajur, said Khan.

Whether you?re embarking on a full-blown home renovation, or simply making a few minor improvements here and there, finding the right home improvement resources is half the battle. Such resource companies like Bookmarc can help.

Recently, I had an epiphany. It came in the middle of my morning ablutions- washing my face, drying my hair, getting myself in a presentable state for the day of professional commitments that lay ahead. I was struck by the incongruity of my situation- scrubbing myself to polished perfection in a bathroom lousy with mould and mildew, lit with a soviet area fluorescent bulb. ?This is not right? I said to myself.

I decided at that moment that I was going to make some improvements to my bathroom. new tiles, new light fittings, new tub. But, ye gads, where to start? Where was I to go to find the right home improvement resources?

One of the most valuable things you can do before you start knocking out walls and getting your hands dirty is taking the time to research your products. If you plan on tackling a few different areas- kitchen and lounge, for instance- you may find yourself on a merry go round of not so merry frustration- driving here, there and everywhere to chase different suppliers, leaving messages with 50 different people from 50 different companies- the tap people, the floor people, the lighting people.

There are online resources that feature comprehensive lists of all the best suppliers in any given category- be it structural elements, facades, or sun control systems. I found this an invaluable tool to get all the information I needed to take my bathroom from a dank, uninviting space to a room I looked forward to being in.

Publishers Start Signing Up For PostRelease?s Content Marketing Network

postrelease logo"Content marketing" is a phrase I hear more and more these days, as brands increasingly create their videos, blog posts, and other forms of content to promote themselves, rather than just relying on traditional advertising. Now a startup called PostRelease has built what is, essentially, an ad network for content marketing, so that advertisers can ensure that their content gets distribution, while publishers can make some revenue. CEO Justin Choi says that publishers just add a few lines of code to their site (or installing the PostRelease plugin for WordPress and vBulletin) and create a template for sponsored posts, then the sponsored content starts running automatically. He argues that PostRelease should be more appealing to publishers than a service like Outbrain, because it isn't linking people to content on other sites, so they aren't necessarily driving readers elsewhere. Right now, for blogs, the sponsored posts always appear as the second post from the top, though Choi says the placements may become more customizable over time.

This book cover image released by Dutton shows "No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission that Killed Osama Bin Laden," by Mark Owen with Kevin Maurer. A first-hand account of the Navy SEAL mission that killed Osama bin Laden is coming out Sept. 11. Dutton announced Wednesday that Mark Owen?s ?No Easy Day? will ?set the record straight? on the raid in Pakistan in May 2011. ?Mark Owen? is a pseudonym for the combat veteran who was one of the first fighters to enter bin Laden?s third floor hideout and also witnessed his death, according to Dutton, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA). (AP Photo/Dutton)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A firsthand account of the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden contradicts previous accounts by administration officials, raising questions as to whether the terror mastermind presented a clear threat when SEALs first fired upon him.

Bin Laden apparently was hit in the head when he looked out of his bedroom door into the top-floor hallway of his compound as SEALs rushed up a narrow stairwell in his direction, according to former Navy SEAL Matt Bissonnette, writing under the pseudonym Mark Owen in "No Easy Day." The book is to be published next week by Penguin Group (USA)'s Dutton imprint.

Bissonnette says he was directly behind a "point man" going up the stairs in the pitch black hallway. "Less than five steps" from top of the stairs, he heard "suppressed" gunfire: "BOP. BOP." The point man had seen a "man peeking out of the door" on the right side of the hallway.

The author writes that bin Laden ducked back into his bedroom and the SEALs followed, only to find the terrorist crumpled on the floor in a pool of blood with a hole visible on the right side of his head and two women wailing over his body.

Bissonnette says the point man pulled the two women out of the way and shoved them into a corner and he and the other SEALs trained their guns' laser sites on bin Laden's still-twitching body, shooting him several times until he lay motionless. The SEALs later found two weapons stored by the doorway, untouched, the author said.

In the account related by administration officials after the raid in Pakistan, the SEALs shot bin Laden only after he ducked back into the bedroom because they assumed he might be reaching for a weapon.

White House spokesman Tommy Vietor would not comment on the apparent contradiction late Tuesday. But he said in an email, "As President Obama said on the night that justice was brought to Osama bin Laden, 'We give thanks for the men who carried out this operation, for they exemplify the professionalism, patriotism and unparalleled courage of those who serve our country.'"

"No Easy Day" was due out Sept. 11, but Dutton announced the book would be available a week early, Sept. 4, because of a surge of orders due to advance publicity that drove the book to the top of the Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com best-seller lists.

The Associated Press purchased a copy of the book Tuesday.

The account is sure to again raise questions as to whether the raid was intended to capture or simply to kill bin Laden. Bissonette writes that during a pre-raid briefing, a lawyer from "either" the White House or Defense Department told them that they were not on an assassination mission. According to Bissonnette, the lawyer said that if bin Laden was "naked with his hands up," they should not "engage" him. If bin Laden did not pose a threat, they should "detain him."

In another possibly uncomfortable revelation for U.S. officials who say bin Laden's body was treated with dignity before being given a full Muslim burial at sea, the author reveals that in the cramped helicopter flight out of the compound, one of the SEALs called "Walt" ? one of the pseudonyms the author used for his fellow SEALs ? was sitting on bin Laden's chest as the body lay at the author's feet in the middle of the cabin, for the short flight to a refueling stop inside Pakistan where a third helicopter was waiting.

This is common practice, as troops sometimes must sit on their own war dead in packed helicopters. Space was cramped because one of the helicopters had crashed in the initial assault, leaving little space for the roughly two dozen commandos in the two aircraft that remained. When the commandos reached the third aircraft, bin Laden's body was moved to it.

Bissonnette writes disparagingly that none of the SEALs were fans of President Barack Obama and knew that his administration would take credit for ordering the May 2011 raid. One of the SEALs said after the mission that they had just gotten Obama re-elected by carrying out the raid.

But he says they respected him as commander in chief and for giving the operation the go-ahead.

Bissonnette writes less flatteringly of meeting Vice President Joe Biden along with Obama at the headquarters of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment after the raid. He says Biden told "lame jokes" no one understood, reminding him of "someone's drunken uncle at Christmas dinner."

Beyond such embarrassing observations, U.S. officials fear the book may include classified information, as it did not undergo the formal review required by the Pentagon for works published by former or current Defense Department employees.

Officials from the Pentagon and the CIA, which commanded the mission, are examining the manuscript for possible disclosure of classified information and could take legal action against the author.

In a statement provided to The Associated Press, the author says he did "not disclose confidential or sensitive information that would compromise national security in any way."

Bissonnette's real name was first revealed by Fox News and confirmed to The Associated Press.

Jihadists on al-Qaida websites have posted purported photos of the author, calling for his murder.

nourishing obscurity ? The war in the sailing world

In posts passim, this blog has decried the way the America?s Cup has gone and not just for the obvious reason.

The obvious reason is that tradition has been thrown out of the window and these boats are no longer ?yachts? in the sense that the public perceives them to be.?? I wrote that, though a multihull man myself, multis have no place in this comp, the highest pinnacle in yachting.

If it weren?t the highest pinnacle, then moguls wouldn?t spend the ridiculous sums they do.?? But there?s another criticism now:

Larry Ellison?s Insane Plan to Turn America?s Cup Into a TV Spectacle

Look, nobody loves sailing more than I do but unless you?re an afficianado, then watching a yacht race is a little like watching paint dry ? at least in fleet racing. Match racing can be more exciting. And sure I?m watching the trials [see pic above] but I?m biased.

The America?s Cup World Series is the circus Ellison has brought to town, and he himself is the ringmaster. It is a warm-up to the America?s Cup match, the one-on-one winner-take-all main event. Ellison won the Cup in 2010, and as long as he holds the trophy, he controls the event and its future.

The World Series is Ellison?s particular stamp, designed to build excitement and anticipation for the finale. Here in Venice, the racecourse winds along the city?s waterfront before crossing a checkered flag near the mouth of the Grand Canal. The Musashi has a front-row seat.

The reality at this point is that his America?s Cup has turned into something of an albatross. Every sailor knows the old saw about the true definition of a boat: a hole in the water into which one throws money.

The only difference here is that Ellison has dug himself a billionaire-size hole. The World Series?indeed Ellison?s whole reimagining of the America?s Cup?is a Sea of Dreams: If you build it, they will come. The budget is confidential, but I?m told by Stephen Barclay, CEO of the America?s Cup Event Authority, that it?s ?well in excess of $100 million.?

Yet so far, few from outside yachting are coming. And inside the yachting world, all anyone can talk about is the financial straits that Ellison?s project is so obviously in. The evidence is everywhere: mass layoffs, radically foreshortened race schedules, and a slew of cancealed plans.

Actually, I?m a bit sad about that because I?ve been enjoying the racing [as a multihull man] but there?s just been too much of it.?? In Fremantle in 1987/8, all sorts of things were expected.?? The real estate market thought the ?home of the America?s Cup? was a good excuse to double house prices or thereabouts, they were charging $AU85 a pop to go out on the water in a launch which stayed to one side of the course and so on.

The reality was that no one would pay those prices, plus Australia lost the Cup back to America and near the end, they were taking people out to see the racing for a song.?? Don?t get me wrong ? there were many people in Fremantle from all round the world ? I met a Canadian mate that way ? and the atmosphere was friendly and vibrant, as a Cup city should be.? The parties were crazy.

In the current series, people are going down to the waterside to look through binoculars but they?re not spending and that?s the thing.?? It may be that the economic climate is to blame or the way the PTB have made flying so unpleasant these days.?? I suspect that people will watch some of it on TV and even go down to the beach if it?s their city the circus is visiting ? those boats look pretty awesome.?? They won?t do Pay-to-View.?? They?ll take the kids down to look but no more than that.

The Olympics were a classic case of actually very good TV coverage, with helicopters, camera angles, graphics and so on and it was watchable for the general public for some time.? In fact, the TV angle was mentioned in the article:

Ellison?s best hope for saving his listing ship now lies in the magic of television. If the World Series can draw a large audience, then the sponsorship money and advertising revenue should be enough to salvage the operation. Sailing doesn?t have to be the next Nascar to make the World Series a success. It merely has to generate the level of domestic interest that, say, the Tour de France has now. Bicycle racing didn?t resonate with American sports fans until relatively recently, but today it is a profitable sports niche. Why couldn?t sailing follow a similar trajectory?

What I object to is that they?ve not only ditched the tradition but they?ve cut right across the territory of the multihull community.?? There was for years a race called the Little America?s Cup and it was, as the name suggests, the pinnacle.

Sadly, the Sea Cliff Yacht Club (SCYC) of New York, which held the deeds, betrayed the multihull community by insisting it would now be raced for in little production boats and in fleet racing, which killed it as a spectacle for most.? That is taking F1 and racing for it in stock cars.

Plus one other thing happened ? the advent of the new ORMAs:

? and round the world maxi-cats. So the C Class, once the fastest things on water, were now no longer so. As an experimental development class, that might always have happened but it?s still sad to see.

The greatest disappointment though is not for the likes of me who have always gone for the speed side of sailing but for the yachties, the yachting community for whom the America?s Cup was the last bastion against the ?plastic fantastics?.?? They?ve basically had their event taken away from them.

Turn Your Backyard Pool into an Island Resort

1 417 1345782799 Turn Your Backyard Pool into an Island Resort

If you plan to have a pool party, you may want to look at dressing up your back yard. Recreate the feel of an island resort paradise without spending a lot of time or money. You will have a party that is talked about for months and fondly remembered when the winter snow has arrived.

Use Items You Have on Hand

Look around the house for some fun-colored towels and roll them up. Place them around the pool where they will be useful for guests getting out of the water. They will add pops of color in different places.

Bright flowers in a vase, whether they are real or artificial, work as a great centerpiece. You can always pick up a few at your local craft store for just a few dollars if you don?t have any on hand. A single flower floating in a bowl also adds an island feel. For evening entertainment, votives with candles lined along the pool add a festive touch.

Get out your kid?s sand bucket, wash it up, and serve candy or sodas in it. Any brightly-colored plates, napkins, or plastic ware that you have on hand will be perfect for a pool party. Go for blues, yellows, oranges, and greens to feel really festive.

Make Your Own Decorations

You don?t have to be very crafty to come up with some unique decorations for your party. For instance, make a simple menu sign with a chalkboard. Use colored chalk to write your drink or food menu on it, and draw figures like a glass or piece of fruit. Buy cheap bamboo sticks and glue them around the edges of the chalkboard. Lean it against a vase or candle on a table, or attach a hanger and hang it on your deck.?

Buy Cheap Items for Your Party

Pick up several tiki torches to keep the bugs away and look festive at the same time. Pick up a few grass skirts from your local party store or online and line a table with them.?

Set the mood with the right music by playing island tunes in the background. You can often find CDs at your local music store or download them from an online digital store.

Buy two or three colorful beach balls and throw them in the pool for the guests to play with. Throw some colored pillows on your patio furniture to dress it up. ?

?

Don?t forget the food to set the mood. Slices of tropical fruit, like pineapples and bananas, placed on a festive platter will be a tasty addition to your party. Serve foods like kabobs for appetizers or your main course. You can find many recipes online to fit in with your island theme.

The main thing to remember when planning your island resort pool party is to keep it fun and simple, so you can enjoy it, too. It is supposed to be laid-back and relaxed, and the host should set the example.

Celeste & Ruby Forever: How Sisters are Doing it for Themselves ...

20120827-175756.jpg

I recently saw two films vying to be the indie hit of the summer: Ruby Sparks and Celeste & Jesse Forever. I was struck by just how similar these films are: both set in Los Angeles, both about 20/30 somethings struggling to find or keep love, and both are written (at least partially) by the lead actress. There are more similarities on that front as well. Zoe Kazan is the daughter of two screenwriters and the granddaughter of Oscar-winning director Elia Kazan. Rashida Jones is the daughter of Grammy-winning composer Quincy Jones and actress Peggy Lipton. Also, both films feature one of my favorite, underappreciated actors Chris Messina, who I first noticed in the 2006 indie film Ira & Abby written by and starring Jennifer Westfeldt, which brings me back to the initial point. Sisters are doing it for themselves by writing films with roles to showcase their talents.

Jennifer Westfeldt has been doing it for years, in addition to the aforementioned Ira & Abby she recently found success again as both writer/ director/ lead actress in Friends with Kids although she is probably still best known for her writer/actress indie breakout Kissing Jessica Stein (and for being the lucky girl to land Jon Hamm). Speaking of Jon Hamm? he provided one of the bright spots in last year?s comedy hit Bridesmaids, co-written by and starring Kristen Wiig. Brit Marling had just two minor credits to her name when she co-wrote and starred in last year?s Another Earth and Sound of My Voice. Now her upcoming projects include a role in Robert Redford?sThe Company You Keep, and her next actress/ screenwriter project will also feature Ellen Page, Alexander Skarsgard, and Julia Ormond. Actress Zoe Lister Jones co-wrote the recent indie release Lola Verus. Although Greta Gerwig took on the lead role, Lister Jones created a juicy supporting role for herself.

20120827-175646.jpg

Even established actresses are getting into the actress/ screenwriter game. After auditioning for a play based on the same story nearly 30 years earlier, Glenn Close finally brought the story of Albert Nobbs to the screen by co-writing and producing, and Isabella Rossellini has recently focused her career on writing and starring in experimental film projects.

Among the current and upcoming actress/ screenwriter projects that will soon be hitting the big screen are: For a Good Time Call? co-written by and starring Seth Rogen?s wife Lauren Miller (the film also features an appearance by noted actress/ screenwriter Nia Vardalos) and Julie Delpy takes on directing as well in 2 Days in New York.

20120827-175957.jpg

Also,Tina Fey, Lena Dunham, and now with her own show Mindy Kaling will be pulling double duty on TV this fall. So whether it?s happenstance, a passing fad, or the beginning of a new and vibrant trend, actresses on the big and small screens are using their pens to carve out roles for themselves.

UN leader to press Iran on nuclear drive, rights

UN leader Ban Ki-moon will stress to Iranian leaders this week that they must take "urgent" action on the country's nuclear drive and human rights, a UN spokesman said Tuesday.

The warning was given as Ban headed for Tehran to take part in the Non-Aligned Movement summit starting Wednesday. The United States and Israel said that Ban should not go to Iran.

The UN secretary general will raise the "clear concerns and expectations of the international community on the issues for which cooperation and progress are urgent for both regional stability and the Iranian people," a UN spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters.

"These include Iran's nuclear program, terrorism, human rights and the crisis in Syria," the spokesman added.

Ban expect to meet Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He arrives in Tehran on Wednesday and leaves again on Friday.

The UN leader has called on Iran, which faces UN sanctions over its nuclear drive, to prove that its research is peaceful. He has also slammed recent remarks by the supreme leader and Ahmadinejad calling Israel a "cancerous tumor."

The United States and European powers say that Iran is seeking to build a nuclear bomb and has sought to increase international pressure. Iran insists it wants nuclear power for peaceful purposes.

Ban has also been urged by human rights groups to take a stand on conditions in the country, which makes extensive use of capital punishment and has also been accused of persecuting political opponents and ethnic minorities.

"It is clear that when he goes there that he will reiterate his concern that the overall human rights situation in Iran remains critical," Haq said.

"And while his program is not yet finalized, he will be directing his message to all segments of Iranian society and the political spectrum.

"Regarding the message on human rights, Iran has an obligation under international law to protect freedom of peaceful assembly, association and expression and allow greater space for media activists, human rights defenders and political activists," the spokesman said.

Special Education Elementary School Student Left Alone On Bus ...

SIMI VALLEY (CBSLA.com)?? Simi Valley school officials are investigating how a special education elementary school student was left alone on a parked school bus for more than four hours on the first day of school last week.

The child was picked after the first day of class at Crestview Elementary School on Aug. 22 and was somehow left behind on the parked bus.

The bus driver thought the bus was empty.

?Seeing it is a bus for disabled children and/or mentally handicapped children, they should definitely check the bus a little bit more,? parent Tracey Carver said.

Temperatures were still high in Simi Valley that day, but the child was not harmed.

?What could have happened in four hours?? Carver said. ?Think of the babies that are left in cars for only a couple hours ? they die.?

The driver has been put on paid leave pending the outcome of a Simi Valley Unified School District investigation.

No other details were immediately available.

"Motown: The Musical" to open on Broadway in 2013

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Berry Gordon, the legendary music producer behind such acts as The Supremes and The Jackson Five, will have his life story spun into a new Broadway musical.

Titled, appropriately enough, "Motown: The Musical," the show will open on at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on April 14, 2013. Preview performances will begin March 11, 2013.

In addition to its opening dates, the show announced that Brandon Victor Dixon and Valisia LeKae have been cast in the leading roles of Gordy and Supremes frontwoman Diana Ross. Dixon received a Tony Award nomination for his performance in "The Color Purple." LeKae has appeared in "The Book of Mormon" and "Ragtime."

Gordy said the show will help audiences rediscover and remember the influence that his stable of pop stars had on American music and culture.

"I feel that Motown is Broadway and Broadway is Motown," Gordy said in a video announcement Tuesday.

Charles Randolph-Wright ("Ruined") will direct the show, which will feature music and lyrics from the Motown catalogue - a collection that includes songs made famous by such hit-makers as Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles and Marvin Gaye.

Gordy will play a key role in the creative direction of the show, having written its book, meaning it may not be a warts and all biography of the Motown record label founder. He will also serve as a producer along with Kevin McCollum and Doug Morris.

The producers said additional casting will be announced shortly.
