Adolescent Mental Health 'is not harmed by abortion, study claims ...

The results were published online in advance of publication in the print edition of the journal Perspectives in December on Sexual and Reproductive Health, published by the Guttmacher Institute, a nonprofit group that monitors state abortion policies.Warren added that while it is true that every woman can react very differently to have an abortion, on average, abortion does not appear to have important psychological consequences for adult women or adolescents.

The researchers compared 69 pregnant teenagers who have had abortions and 220 pregnant teenagers who didn t of the procedure. For the study, the researchers used standard measures of depression and self-esteem, and looked at the mental health of participants before and during pregnancy and one year and five years later.

In a press release provided by the Oregon State University, lead author of the study Jocelyn Warren, a postdoctoral research associate at the university, explains that researchers already know that pregnancy increases depression and low self self among adolescents . What we didn t know was whether the results are worse psychologically for girls who choose abortion. The study says, No.

The data show that some women are traumatized, says Coleman. It can be a life-changing decision is negative for many women. They deserve to know first what are the risks.

Both sides of the abortion debate have seized on a recent research, the emotional effects of abortion. In the new study, researchers at Oregon State University and the University of California, San Francisco examined the statistics of the National Longitudinal Survey of Health of adolescents. In particular, the researchers studied the responses of 269 adolescents who were in Grades 7 to 12 from 1994-1995.
