Punta Cana By Dune Buggy

The Dominican Republic is considered by many not to be a resort but an adventure destination, and rightly so - the landscape is perfect for any number of outdoor activities ranging from diving to climbing to horseback riding. A popular adventure activity in Punta Cana is dune buggy touring; it offers both exhilaration as well as an opportunity to see Punta Cana in a new and exciting way. A dune buggy, traditionally, is a vehicle built with oversized tires, an open chassis and exposed engine for the express purpose of traversing uneven terrain - in other words, perfect for racing around sand dunes and beaches! Tube framed buggy's and fiberglass bodied buggy's are the two most common types found in Punta Cana and are available for touring or, for those who wish to be in the driver's seat, rentals.

Good buggy tour operators in your vicinity, will be recommended by many Punta Cana resorts. Before you book, make sure you know exactly what you want from a tour, and make sure you clarify with the tour operator exactly what you will be getting. Beach tours are offered by some vendors; with a beach tour there are usually two options, you can drive the buggy yourself, or, you can be a passenger while an experienced driver takes the wheel. Should you decide to drive yourself, your experience level will necessitate how you approach speed and maneuvering while on the tour. Expect to have some adrenaline pumping through your veins, as passengers on tours will be treated to an assortment of maneuvers intended to add excitement to the outings.

Dune buggy tours also extend beyond the beach to encompass larger areas throughout the island; many of these longer, more expansive tours can last for an entire morning or afternoon so dress and prepare accordingly (pack food and drink). For those seeking more of an adventure, there are tours that are 3 or 6 days in length that encompass the entire island. For the tours that stray away from the beaches, you can expect to get a much fuller view of island living - day-to-day living for many people takes place on plantations and farms, and if you book an excursion, you may get to visit some of them to get a greater experience of the local lifestyle. Sometimes whale sightings can be had at tours that are closer to beach areas!

A buggy rental or tour is also a great family excursion, should you be travelling with children. Keep that in mind before you book, that bringing along the kids will likely mean staying closer to the shorter beach tours. Dune buggies are a good choice for sightseeing, as the roads in Punta Cana are in somewhat rough condition, and while it is fine to putter around on scooters or other vehicles, they aren't wonderful for long drives - the great thing is, since they are meant to be taken off-road, you will see so much more than if you just stick with the paved areas.
