2 men injured in shooting outside Washington Community Center

TERRE HAUTE ? A shooting in Terre Haute remained under investigation Sunday evening as two victims were sent to area hospitals.

Yellow tape marked off a section of the Booker T. Washington Community Center?s parking lot Sunday afternoon where shell casings, blood and a knife remained on the ground as investigators checked the scene.

According to police, an altercation involving weapons occurred in the parking lot about 2:50 p.m. The lot is on the south side of the building, between the center and the Chuck Miles Memorial Shelter and the nearby playground.

The center is at the corner of 13th Street and College Avenue.

A community basketball tournament was reportedly under way inside the center at the time. Terre Haute City Parks and Recreation Department employee Martin DeBow was identified as the individual in charge of the tournament, but he declined to comment on the incident. Dozens of people wearing basketball team jerseys remained in the area past 4 p.m., but those asked for comment also declined.

Capt. Carl Greene said that to the best of his knowledge that afternoon, two men were shot during the incident and both were transported to local hospitals before being sent by air to Indianapolis. No more information would be available while the investigation continued, he said.

?We?re still trying to gather information,? he said at the scene, stating no arrests had been made and investigators were still trying to identify a suspect.

In another incident, 911 dispatchers said shots also were reported outside the Blu Katt Lounge off Seventh Street and Wabash Avenue at 1:58 a.m. Sunday morning. According to police, no injuries were reported and no arrests had been made by Sunday evening with regards to that incident.
