NFL News: Cowboys Plan To Sign Tony Romo To Contract Extension

Tony RomoOne of the most criticized players in the NFL today is none other than quarterback Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys. Although very talented and arguably one of the better quarterbacks in the league, Romo hasn?t been all that successful during his time in Dallas with zero playoff wins and few impressive performances in clutch situations for the Cowboys.

Despite the endless criticism of Romo and a good number of Cowboys fans asking for a change at the quarterback position seemingly on an annual basis, owner Jerry Jones continues to stick by the veteran and reportedly intends to sign him to an extension via Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com:

?Tony is a key piece of what we?re about going forward,? Jones said Tuesday. ?We?re certainly going to be looking at his situation (in) time. We?ve historically (extended contracts) with quarterbacks for the Dallas Cowboys ahead of time. We did it with Troy (Aikman) and we certainly want to look at that with Tony so we can all move forward in terms of how we want to play around our salary cap with our team. Tony is the key piece in terms of how your cap is represented.?

There?s no question that Romo is as talented as the majority of the quarterbacks in the league today, but the 32-year-old tends to make questionable and risky decisions in big games that has kept him winless in the NFL playoffs and without a Super Bowl title.

Obviously, Jones still believes in Romo and a lucrative contract extension appears to be on the horizon, but the question remains on whether or not he?s the right man for the job under center in Dallas.

One more season filled with disappointment and failed expectations might be enough to send Romo to the bench or for the team to cut their ties with the veteran altogether. The Cowboys franchise is not partial to waiting for results with high-priced players and regardless of Jones? intentions may part ways with Romo with another disappointing season in 2013.
