Texas set a new record for wind-power generation thanks to the powerful thunderstorm that rolled through the state Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Wind power peaked at 9,481 megawatts of power at 7:08 p.m on Feb. 9, according to a press release from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which operates the state's power grid. That?s about 28 percent of ERCOT?s load at that time. More than 75 percent of the wind power came from turbines in West Texas, according to a press release.
The previous record was 8,667 megawatts set on Jan. 29.
?As wind generation capacity continues to be added in ERCOT and additional transmission lines are being completed to accommodate that generation, we continue to set new records,? Kent Saatoff, ERCOT?s vice president of grid operations and system planning, said in the release.
Wind generation fluctuates throughout the day based on the weather, but ERCOT uses the latest technologies to predict patterns and maximize potential, Saathoff said.
